Is this a Good Start for a newbie???

Ive been offered 13/hr to drive Longhaul by a local company that runs 2007 and newer freightliners. There is no overtime pay. Company pays for a shower a day and 20$ towards food each day. I really like the feel of the company and I get the sense that they really take care of employees. there seems to be flexibility in home time and potenial growth. The Company also provides a Cell Phone (work only). Im leaning towards this offer. Any thoughts???

Yes, if it's as simple as you stated it seems to me to be an excellent start! Welcome to the forum!

Well, how do YOU feel about it? My opinion - you're a rookie driver getting paid for everything you are doing (I'm a BIG fan of hourly pay for truck drivers). A cellphone and $20 for food is a nice perk. What about healthcare coverage? Do they supply that? Do you get any time off? The economy is tanking and people are getting laid off all over the place, all over the map, in all kinds of different companies. What else have you found or have been offered? Does it compare to this? Do you feel that it is a good starting point for you? You know that if you stick with it, you will be making more pay in the future. Of course, only you can really answer your own question. Factors such as - can that kind of money pay your bills - have to come into play. It sounds good to me for a new driver and what I have seen being offered by reading alot of stuff on this board.
Just carefully consider your options.
Good luck!

How fast will their trucks go? 55 mph? I know of some companies that hire newbies at 24 cents per mile. In their 65 mph trucks that is $15.60 per hour, given you are doing 65.
I'm not to fond of the idea of doing longhaul for $13 per hour, and no overtime.
It would be a start, though. Someplace to get your experience. After a year or two, maybe you could find a better paying position.

GOOD LUCK!

hello all. Thanks for the responses. I have been busy interviewing. Anyway, I decided on taking a job with a local company that my friend works for. he is brining in around 900+/wk and home on weekends. I am waiting for a trainer now. As for the hourly job. They had full benefits (preferred) they also paid for the Dental. I was ultimately turned away because of the mystery behind potential growth in the company. Even with the extras I still would have been making about 9/hr after taxes and time worked. They also could not guarantee me more than 45 hours a week OTR. It just didnt feel right. They also did not pay for loading or if I was late I would not get paid for waiting. By the way, What are the rules for overtime in that situation.

On another note. Im excited to get started on the road. My backing really sucks, but that will get better with time and practice...

I do believe the transportation industry, unfortunately does not fall under the same employment laws when it comes to hourly pay, etc.

The airline employees have the same types of problems and I know they work under the Railway Act...........and it sucks....
