backing a truck up

My husband is currently in training and the instructor stinks. He is not even teaching the class how to back the truck up and expects them all to be able to do it on friday. My husband has no issue grabbing gears but the backing has been a bit of a problem. If he had a good instructor he would be fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

set-up set-up set-up. a proper setup allows for ALOT easier backing. i dont know what amount of space they allow where he is but, the way i teach is this.....
pull up along barrels/cones at a 90* angle about 8-10 feet out. stop when drive tires are between the further barrel/cone STOP
turn wheel all the way right, then go forward till tractor is "straight" (meaning 90* from where he started) STOP
turn wheel all the way left, then pull forward till tractor is straight again (90* from previous STOP) then STOP
straighten wheel, then back up about 12 feet, turn hard left to "get behind it" and adjust the wheel, if necessary, to get in straight
very hard to explain without actually showing, but if set up right the truck/trailer will back right in and be almost straight without pulling up.

With your hands at the top of the steering wheel, turn it toward the direction the trailer is traveling. Ex: If the trailer is in your right side mirror, turn the top of the steering wheel to the right. Back slowly and 'anticipate' where the trailer will travel. Start your correction once you see it start to get off track, not once it does get off track.

that was a common mistake with myself,(at first) and my first 2 students .it takes practice to realize it sooner rather than later that "this ain't gonna get it" LOL
i say driving/backing a truck is like playing chess. always think 3 steps (or more) ahead of what you are currently doing.

Also the slower the better you can actually outrun your trailer by going to fast your tractor be fishtailing all over the place trying to keep the trailer straight.
And thinking a few seconds ahead like someone said earlier is also very good advice.
Example when doing the 90deg. backup and you're backing your trailer towards the hole, once your trailer gets to about a 45deg. angle slowly start straightening your wheels back up in line with your trailer until tractor and trailer are both straight in line with the hole, you may need a pull up or two.
It usually takes anywhere from 5 to 10ft for your trailer to react to your tractors action, depends on what size of trailer.

My 2 cents,btw I'm not a trucker (yet)but I've pulled a 30ft gooseneck horsetrailer for 25 years,same principal.

Also here's a practice game,choose the semi tractor/trailer option.

I allways found it easier to back up by actually looking at the rear of the trailer instead of trying to use the mirror. with some conventionals this may require opening the door and leaning way out. Try to set up so the angle is right then just follow the trailer around into the spot. Then when its straight back use the mirrors. The less you turn the wheel the better. Oversteer when your backing up will get you all out of shape. Go slow. If your not sure where the blind side of the trailer is get out and look.

Find another instructor and/or practice a lot. Backing has to be learned by doing, it can't be learned by anyother way.

Go over his head,he's being paid to do a job and he should do it.Drivers out here complain all the time about new drivers but they don't stop to think who's teaching them, there has to be somebody he can go to

some of those tests are point tests... turning around a cone... close is a point... real close is two points... hitting the cone is an auto fail...

don't be a hero.... just make the corner and stick in the hole... stop early... and pass the damned test...

when I went to school all the super truckers were planning on a perfect score... two failed and had to repeat...

me I just got it close enough to pass... no sweat. hehe done in under 30 minutes... pre-trip, range and driving.

funny my license didn't look any different than anybody elses... lol
