Trucking too risky right now for new career?

Just wondering with the economic situations out there,is there still a demand for new drivers?

Because of the high turnover of drivers that get unhappy and leave the industry there will always be a demand for drivers . If I was to look into a new career I'd look into working on water transportation . It'll be a growing field and the conditions are good with shifts of 4 hours on , 8 hours off (now we know where to send all the teams crying about not being able to split 5 hours on , 5 hours off ) and 60 days on 30 days off . I know crewmen working the rivers and they say you can advance to pilot fairly quickly . Seamen's unions offer free training .

There will always be a need for truck drivers but you have to figure with the economy slowing that the miles will be less. So if you get paid by the mile and your driving 2000mi aweek making .30cpm that is $600.00 a week before deductions.. So if you drive less than 2000 and make less than .30 then you figure it out...

With more companies going bankrupt there will be less trucks to pull the freight . That won't really affect the miles but companies like Schneider turning the trucks back to 60 m.p.h. will reduce the potential miles per day . Thursday I had a Schneider trainer pass me in a 55 m.p.h. construction zone with his 60 m.p.h. truck . I expect to see a lot of that . Further up the road he had an elephant race with a TMC driver who had a faster truck but heavier load on a grade . When the TMC driver was barely 2 car lengths ahead of the training engineer Schneider told him on the CB to bring it over . That left Schneider less than half the required safe stopping interval . I'd say trucking is risky any time with drivers like this out there pushing any way they can to get as many miles as possible out of a castrated truck .

yeppers and don't forget the relay game....

"we pay if you have to sit" layover pay 100-125 a day...

yeah right !!!! so you got one run going from jersey - omaha....

and ten guys relay it from city to city to city to city...

there ya go boys... you all pulled her 200 miles a pop... and got to each sit for the next 16 hours for free.... no layover pay, ya'll worked...

that'll save the company $800 in layover pay and leave you flat broke at the end of the week.

Get in while you can. Things could look a whole lot different in a year. Sure, the turn over is high but as the economy slides there are going to be a whole lot of former drivers looking to get back in at the same time as there are less jobs. I would also say that if you're not happy with the company you're working for but you have some seniority this wouldn't be a good time to jump ship. We're not seeing much effect yet but in a relatively short time everyone is going to be wondering how things changed so quickly. The economy is grinding down. I sure wouldn't want to be a steel hauler right now for example.

I work for Roehl and get $.37 a mile. My miles are up averaging 2600 to 3000 every seven days. We haul a lot of household necessities and so always have freight. I'll worry when people go from using toilet paper to corn cobs.

One of the reasons I got into trucking was that it is somewhat recession proof. There are a lot of companies failing during a turn down in the economy, but this is normal in any industry. From time to time an industry will become oversaturated and a shakeout will happen. In the end what survives are the strong companies both large and small, the financially weak go by-by. The same thing happened with the Dot Com crash. Not every company went belly up just the ones that weren't making a profit. Two of the success stories are Amazon and Ebay. Trucks will always roll as long as stores stay in business and trucks need drivers.
