The oilfield up here is bad for cocaine. Not uncommon for guys up here to make 5K to 10K/month and on their days off they'll blow it on coke. It's gone in a few days unlike chronic pot smokers where it will stay in their system for well over a month in some cases.

I was teamed up with a driver who would wear tinted safety glasses when we were at the wellsite. I never thought anything of it until I caught him puffing on a crack pipe in the sleeper. This was a guy who served 8 years in jail for attempted murder. He was a drug dealer and came to a guys house with an AK-47 and the cops busted him. Real great coworker.

Drug users have no place on the road, even if they are only running 4 wheels.

When I got a job with this one oil company, the manager of that company asked me how much time I needed to get sober for the test. If someone came in and did a random test on the spot, there would've only been 4 of us left. I wish the trucking industry was still regarded as that "golden opportunity" and there would be enough sober people out there to replace the druggies.

Just to add, with the recent slowdown in the oilfield the burnouts with that one company are now gone, and even that manager has left! maybe things are starting to look up...but I doubt it.

That opportunity you speak of, resulted in the untimely deaths and institutionalization, of many a driver over the years.

The 60's and early 70's were famous for long hours/days without sleep. It was nothing for a driver to keep a bottle of pills on his truck. I know a few who suffered shrinkage of the brain due to the excessive use of amphetamines.

One popular pill was known as a "West Coast Turnaround", the name says it all.

I worked Oil Field for a few years. You're correct, drug usage is rampant. We would call the office, and ask for the pharmacy to be sent out. Usually one of our straw bosses would show up in an hour or two, with a couple of bottles of scripts. When we bought a bag of weed...it said "Big Star" or Winn-Dixie" on the side. Not "Glad" And it cost 10 times as much...as a Glad bag.

The late 70's is when we first started seeing other "hard core" drug usage. And it's gotten progressively worse.

Although I do see some headway being made. As companies finally start to take the issue seriously. A couple of million in lawsuits will do that.

Illegal? This has been gone over at the Supreme Court level. It's legal and ,IMHO, necessary.

Ever hear of the 4th Amendmant ? Its there for a reason might wanna read it sometime . I dont use " drugs " but i would sure like to smoke a joint in MY house on a Saturday evening while watching a movie . But i can't because the SUPREME COURT says im a danger on the road on Monday morning even though the effects of said joint aren't a factor what so ever on " SAFETY " A urine test doesnt prove anything . Snort some coke on Friday night good chances you'll be clean on monday . Do some heroin clean in 72 hours . They test for PCP ? Can you even find that stuff anymore ? But lets talk about an Alcoholic ..now theres a DRUG for ya ! Right Supreme Court ... and dont bust me up with your DOT Breath Alcohol Tests . what a joke the entire system is a joke . Drink more kool aid you think this system is keeping people safe . How about keeping Illegal Aliens who can't read ENGLISH off our highways . Now theres a Safety Issue for ya . Tell ya who runs this country Insurance Companies , Lawyers, and Doctors. Gonna Test ? Test EVERYONE on the road ! A honda can cause just as much mayhem as a Semi given the right circumstances . Dont give me the weight thing im not buying it . 4 Wheelers get in more wrecks . PERIOD !
Facts: Estimates of 41,000 to 45,000 traffic deaths occur every year within
the U.S.. Walkers and bikers account for 15% of the total traffic deaths each
year. Fewer than 9% of those deaths involve commercial vehicles. More than 80%
of those accidents are the fault of the non-commercial driver. Of those, death
related accidents only 4% of trucks are fatigue related. Drinking related
accounted for .06% of those accidents.

Fatigued ? maybe that driver coulda used a " BUMP " ?

Maybe they should come up with a test for THC that only goes back 24 hours? I don't want someone high coming down the road at me, but if they did it in their home, on their time off, I could care less. I think it is less dangerous than alcohol...
