How long would i make it...

If i was expecting trucking to be a tourist lifestyle
I always imagined you get on the road at 4am drive 10 or 12 hrs shut down in the next town/city and go see the sights, catch a movie grab some dinner or maybe your driving thru Nevada and decide to detour and check out the strip for an evening.

how far will i get with this mentality?

How far would you get? Depends on the town. In West Memphis, maybe two truck lengths.

A lot of places we end up shutting down are less than savory. How would you get around? Detouring someplace while on the companies dime will likely get you fired. Remember, this is a job, not a vacation. It's important to have a life outside the truck, and there is nothing wrong with getting out on the town for a little bit during a 10 or reset, but I think you'll be sorely disappointed if this is what you expect out of trucking. I know personally, when I drive a full day the last thing on my mind is going out. I find food and then I find my bed.

The romance of this industry is freedom, travel, and adventure. Sadly romance and reality don't see eye to eye.

once ya hit the road you will be dead tired after 11 hours dealing with traffic, idiot four wheelers and the weather. Food, shower, bed will be all ya think about. Driving for a living is not a sight seeing trip, to say the least....its WORK...and whatever your hauling is expected to be on time without causing anyone one more cent than necessary.

Maybe doing a restart you might hit a decent spot, operative word MAYBE and then its all about getting around etc.

Dr. Venture is right.......the romance and reality miss eachother by a mile

It can be a lot of fun, but it can also be very stressful. It is work but it is like no other job you have ever had. Yes sometimes you get a hotel, watch a movie, go fishing, skiiing, hiking etc... But most of the time you will be so tired that eating and showering at the end of the day will consume all your efforts. I use end of the day term lightly also, because in trucking there never is a definitive end of the day. You never drive ten hours and hang it up. You are delivering and picking up at all hours 2am to 6am is for the most part the norm. When you do have a chance to shut down you maybe in walmart parking lot or trk stop or rest stop. You may even be on the side of the road in the middle of wyoming in the snow for days. One thing to know about trucking is that it is never normal. The only thing you can plan on is the plan changing.

The life style of truck drivers and cowboys has been romanticized by Hollywood. Cowboys actually spent too many hours in the saddle, on duty 24/7, air pollution, storms, rustlers, stampedes, chuck wagon food, no family time, no medical or dental services, and then the drover cheated them out of their pay. How is the life of a truck driver any better?

K2000kid should win the lottery and buy a motor home.

Well, at least you did not just jump into something blind. Unfortunately, there are a lot of folks that have the same notion you did. They pay thousands of dollars to go to private trucking schools. The folks there certainly are not going to tell them the truth about this job. All they want is the money.

So once you graduate, you find a job with a trainer, and (drum roll here)

Truckers

reality sets in. This is one reason why there is such a turnover in this industry.
