I am a complete newbie to this career, and I wonder if you have any say in whether you can ask for cross-country driving routes when you first start out. I'd love to be able to drive all over the country. Particularly northern CA, OR, and Nevada. How can someone obtain a position driving in that specific region? Is that even possible? Would the best way be to go to a training school in that region that helps you find a job afterwards?

If you're not tied down in NJ, the best way to work in CA and OR would be to open a mailbox somewhere in that area and say it's your home address. Of course, then, you wouldn't get back to NJ very much.

It's nice to drive where you want to but choose the company that fits you the best.

absolutely what GasHauler said - pick the company first - THEN worry about where you'll be driving. The truck goes all over, but the company is always with you.
