Just curious about how long the lines are in your area. Here in NC I'm told the waits about 3 hours to unload. I'm storing my grain but heard a freind of mine say he waited over 6 hours to unload in Raleigh NC last week. I usally haul in Jan and Feb and have to wait # 1 -2 hours.

Worst I've been to is Purina in Nashville . 3 or 4 hours is not unusual . If you get behind a truck with peanut hulls they can take 2 hours to unload . If a truck comes in with a product they are low on they'll move it line ahead of you . They only pay detention if their unloading system breaks down or the bin for your product is too full to take your load .

Waited 20 minutes at the elevator to unload to wet holding a couple of times, otherwise just for a couple trucks to clear the ethanol plant scale, this was a few weeks back.

Most of the times I get through with only a couple trucks ahead of me. The worst I've been in this year was about a 1 1/2 hour wait. How could you even get anything done with a 4 hour wait? That would only be 2-3 loads a day if you are lucky.

I've got a question for you guys, if you do not mind me asking. How do you guys charge, by the bushel, by the mile, or a combo of both? My average load is about 10 - 40 miles one way. Last year I charged $3 per loaded mile + $.04 per bushel. After my expenses, I really did not make very much money. This year I raised it $1 per loaded mile. I know that I am higher than any of the Co-ops around here, but that is how much it takes for me to actually make money.

The guys I know around here all charge by the bushell,..not sure how the figure it...
-
I do not see how guys can do that. They make the same amount for a 10 mile trip as they do for a 100 mile trip.

well haven't hauled grain since the frist of the year but it used to be by the bushel except milo and that was cwt....BUT it (bu and cwt)used to always figure out to # $1/mile figured on around 25 ton min........
Baack Thanks this. -
I know a couple of guys that have a rate per bushel by area. like one area is so much a bushel and another that is a little farther is a little more per. It works out pretty good because of all the different places he runs weather it be Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Clinton....and so. I can get his scale if ya wanna know it.

I think I need to go with a zone system. That way it is fair to both me and the farmer, no matter how long or short the trip.
