Well, the ten year mark has been reached. I am sitting here ready to make the move to owner/operator. Truck is all picked out and the financing is ready. But with the rates that companies are paying right now, it's still a pretty tough decission on if I should make the jump. Even with the ten years since my felony conviction, the pickings are still slim which makes it even harder to convince myself that I am doing the right thing.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's getting harder for felons to find work these days...

I've heard it said that the average American commits something like 5 felonies a day, without even realizing it. Each of these can mean prison time... and as has been stated in this thread, it can be a real wet blanket on making a living.

As for evidence of the above... all those folks who put their prescription drugs in a handy-dandy daily pill organizer? Felons. Can't carry prescription drugs outside the "official" container.

It is at first and if you do not go the extra mile to prove yourself.
With ten years clear and three years driving experience, I am doing better. Not saying I haven't had my feelings hurt a couple of times though.
I did sign on with a company last Friday and I went on Monday and put the deposit on a truck. I went through a dealership and because it is coming from Freightliner as a used unit with an extended warranty it will take a few days for all the test to be done and anything wrong to be fixed before they deliver it. I'm getting a complete history of any recalls and claims done under warranty. I also expect that I will be working harder now that it's my ### on the line instead of someone else's. But it's what I want and I understand there will be sacrifices. Anyone in my position that is serious about wanting something better out of life will understand where I am at and where I am going.
I can say that I was not tied down to just one or two choices. Several doors were open for me to make my best decission. It just takes time.

Walkins & Sheppard will hire with a fellony from what I have herd....at least the is what the recruiter at Wester Pacific Trucking School told me (as she was listing off companies they offer job placement with). I do not have a fellony, so I didn't follow up on the info.

The trucking industry will exploit you for being a felon. If you can find someone to hire you, it will be a bottom of the barrel fly by night chicken hauler outfit. You might think it's worth it to get your foot in the door but by the time you age yourself a decade in three years, it won't seem worth it. It's a shame but the trucking industry has a way of making good people, I mean #### fine folks, kind of edgy.

Five years ago I received a ticket for following to close. That is regarded as "wreckless driving" and I was no better than a felon while job hunting. That's why I stayed with Schneider as long as I did. They would not have hired me either but I had been there awhile and it was decided by my superiors that I could stay on board. It took time but I found a better job.

I always heard from Schneider drivers that they made an above average cmp pay. I've talked to a couple of mechanics at Freightliner and they told me they had some of the most abused equipment they had to work on.

Heck yea. Schneider has the filthiest most beat up fleet on the road. You'll see some drivers that take care of their equipment, treat it like their own, and operate with pride but look at the slipseating junk that is used on their Wal Mart Dedicated.

Had a guy that ran that account that lives close by me. Heard him one day when he came home and parked the truck. The transmission was making so much noise I was surprised that it was even still on the road and it was an almost new truck. Go figure.

Yea Schneider has some questionable maintenance practices alright. I stayed with them so long because a few years back we ran some #### good miles and got home like clockwork. I just got tired of living on the road. Still love the work but prefer to be home on the weekends.
