Do trucking companies require or give preference to hiring graduates of accredited schools over non-accredited?

There's a couple of schools I'm looking into. The non-accredited one looks like they will bend over backwards to help me, allowing me to train extra hours if I need to and so on. The accredited school has a set schedule and if you don't feel ready for the test it's your problem not theirs.

Most smaller companies and family owned places will look at the accredited schools over the non but in my opinion most of the major haulers dont care to much.

Crete and Trans-Am care about it. Not sure why.

Well I've been doing tons of research on it today and called around to a million different trucking companies. Apparently they all have their own set of schools that they choose from and there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason behind it. PTDI seems to have the most widely accepted program but even that won't be accepted everywhere *sigh*.

I've put an emergency cancel on my CDL schooling application and I've decided to get a pre-hire arranged before I go to school anywhere so that I'm not wasting my cash. $2,000 is a lot of money to waste on a vague hope.

In all fairness, I would suggest you look for a fleet that is still running their own school. given the tight economy and wealth of unemployed drivers, many have shut them down for now. However, a company school is free (in most cases) with a work contract. Every company is going to treat a new driver out of school so-so at best. Thats life and welcome to trucking. It gets you the training for free and after a year or two with the company that trained you, you can either stay or go virtually anywhere you want. It's just a thought, but it gives you a 100% job at the end (they won't even give you a ticket to come until they are sure you're qualified) and then it's yours to screw up or gut out until you complete the contract and have the experience. Just remember something in this..... A few exceptions in mom and pop companies exist, but 99% will treat you about the same as a green driver out of school. We all went through it. With that in mind, getting the training for free is worth it.

there is no free training, anywhere.

My advice is pay if you can, or see if your state has voucher/grant to attend a training program, ptdi course.

typically 2000-2500 and you can go where you want versus the same training and a 5k repayment plan from said free training company.

    also:

most big training companies; schneider, roehl, usa, transport america, ect... will reimburse you for having already completed a ptdi course, upto 5000 dollars. usually 150 a month reimbursement for every month you work for them.

I had the money up front myself, did well in school, and am currently loving life...

hope things work out for you. be well..
