Can truckers use the left lane ever when there are 3 lanes or more?

First off it's not called a 'hammer lane'. It's a passing lane. Being in the passing lane does not exempt you from driving the posted speed-limit. Also most states have a 'keep right except to pass law', so if you are lingering in the left lane you will get a ticket.

Second, some exits are to the left, and in these cases it's not against the law for a truck to be there.

I have read on here that someone got a ticket for being in the 3rd lane passing on the Grapevine, TX area.

One person got over into the left merge lane too soon, I guess more than a mile from where the lane merge went off.

The worst part is if you are over in the middle lane, the cars who like to zip past you on the right side get in your blind spot if you're not careful, you make have you're signal on trying to move over and they are in such a big hurry to steal you're space.

The signs that said trucks 2 right lanes only in California are gone so I'm guessing you can use whatever lane as long as you are passing.

Cars will still flash like crazy or get in front of you and point right.

Just makes sense not to stack up trucks in the right two lanes of a four lane highway

More and more studies are coming out the trucks no left lane do more harm than good

While we are not exempt from the speed limit, if I am setting up for a left exit a mile or two ahead of the exit, I go with the flow of traffic. Don't be a Poindexter about speed limits. If general flow of traffic in the hammer lane is 5 mph more than the speed limit, stay with the flow.

In addition to that be aware that 4 wheelers have a natural tendency to assume a truck in the hammer lane is an ####### and going slow, so they will want to pass you on the right. Make room for them to safely pass if at all possible.

You have to get over early to safely take the exit. Don't become a road block by insisting on going much slower than prevailing traffic. It works out much safer that way.

I work out of OKC, which has a lot of left lane exits. In particular are the freeway interchanges that have an exit on the left to go west on I-44 and an exit on the right to go north on I-44 (for example). ALWAYS be aware that folks in ALL kinds of vehicles assume exits are always on the right. Be prepared for last second panic lane changes across four or five lanes.

No, Illinois does not. Chicago area has the restriction. Elsewhere in the state, no such restriction exists.

    Edit: another ####ing resurrected thread...
