I am very new to trucking havent even gotten my CDL yet, but I have spent over 23 years in computers. Stay away from these hot spots both Cingular and Verizon now offer a wireless broadband that offers bandwidth at DSL speeds. It is truly awesome and the price is heading down as we speak. As for why I am going from computers to trucking is it is going to be hard as hell for this career to be outsourced to India or the Philipines.

Nothing wrong with wi-fi if you are careful. You can download a program called Ji-Wire that will encrypt what you send over the airwaves, and you can buy pre-paid cards for most of the providers so you don't have to use a credit card. Most truck stops have wi-fi, Pilot and Loves use Siricom, Flying J has their own, and so does TA. Idle-air also has hotspots. They cost anywhere from $3 for an hour, $5-$8 for 24 hrs, or you can buy monthly or yearly subscriptions.
DON'T check you bank account or pay your bills over wi-fi!!!! even with that Ji-Wire program, which is supposed to be secure, I'd be very careful about broadcasting bank info.
As far as speeds, some are fast, and some are frustratingly slow.
To use them, you just turn on your wi-fi adapter, connect to the signal you want, and the first page that comes up will be a log in page with intructions to get you started.
I only just got a verizon card a couple of weeks ago, and it's even better cause I can get online anywhere, but it's a little on the expensive side, so I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to do online.

Feels good to see I'm not the only one.

DSL speeds

If that is true, then you can use Skype.com to make all your telephone calls very cheaply. That is excellent..

Holy necro!
A necro is when someone brings a very old post back to the top. hehe..

Anyway, don't count on DSL sped all the time. You're better off with a cell phone since it will work as long as it has signal. That very same signal that powers the phone may not be enough to give you the DSL speed you need for VOIP service.
