I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to not rent while driving Over the Road.

I noticed that you are required to notify the DMV of any change in address. Other than friends or family is there any way to live without a permanent address or establish a permanent address without paying rent and utilities?

If I get home time I plan to use a cheap motel, and keep anything I don't need all the time in a storage facility.

Also I noticed you can't rent a PO Box without a permanent address in the area.
I know there are mail box services, but the Government won't take them as an address so I guess that is a dead end. I feel sorry for the homeless. It's like the Government expects everyone to own or rent a place and not live out of their car or truck.

    Suggestions welcome.

Not sure...my husband had a PO box in WI while he had no physical address...perhaps he got it before he went out on the road.

Do you have family in the Area? Just use one. We have my husbands mail sent to his mother's, as sending it home to Canada is often a big pain in the butt...

The best way is what Snowbunny suggested. Use a family member's or a friend's address as your permanent address, then stop by regularly and p/u your mail. A far as rest that's a good way to go if your family can't or won't let you store your things there.

You've come to the right person to help you out. The only requirement to get a P.O. Box is that you need a permanent address. If you currently don't have one, arrange with a family member/friend/cousin/girlfriend to use their address to receive mail. (perfectly legal) Then, assuming they allow you to, send yourself a lot of mail at their address for about 30 days or so. This process establishes "residency" with the mailman. Then apply for a P.O. Box at the Post Office. The Post Office will ask the local mailman if he delivers mail for you at that residence. Once he confirms this, you will get a P.O. Box. Now remember, sometimes there is a waiting list for box rentals. Forget about the PMB's at the retail mail centers. Those aren't allowed for official things such as driver license etc.

Or, as we use to do in the "olden days", use your companys address where you go through the terminal occasionally and get your mail there. (perfectly legal). That's assuming you can receive mail there.

Another way is to look in the travel trailer magazines in the back pages (classifieds), there are companies that do mail forwarding for the retired folks that are 'full timers' that basically have the same problem as some truckers, That being living on the road with no permanent address. You rent their address, receive your mail there, (perfectly legal) and let them know where to send it and when to send it. In that situation, you could have a PMB at a retail mail packaging store and have the forwarded mail sent there in a manila envelope.

And lastly, you could go to a local mom and pop motel in your area and ask them if you can use their address to receive mail, just as if you were renting a motel room monthly. Pay them a token fee, Mom and Pop operations work better, because they don't have various clerks working there who might mistakingly throw away YOUR mail. :Property:

Well I don't know why you would want to live without a permanent address or some place to rent. This seriously affects your taxes.

The way I understand Per Diem...you get paid for each day you are away from your taxable home base. If you don't have a permanent address and just live in the truck, you are losing TONS of money because you can't take the per diem deduction.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

Bump. Is there a easy way to establish residence in TX without using a lot of money per year? I want my CDL in TX and just want to be on the road.

best way I found was in the book "How to be Invisible"
It talks about ghost boxes and po boxes if you can get a po box and ask someone to check it for you that would work.
For example if you rent an apartment for a one to three months and get a po box you can mail in the money and the renewal for the po box and not renew your lease on the apartment. Then all mail to you would be forwarded. Just don't keep trying to vote.
Not voting would make staying at that address easier.
The problem is most homeless use a relatives address for mail or the address of a shelter they stay at. So there is no provisions for someone to simply not have one.
Besides having not physical address would play havoc on who gets to vote in what race. You clearly have a right to vote on national races, but which senators and local people should you be allowed to vote for as it is based on your home address.

I'm still looking into other methods and how to get the law changed, but as any polygamist could tell you that's a long road even if the constitution is on your side.

My id is from Ga and so is my vehicle registration and insurance. I got that all before started trucking. I pay GA state taxes. For almost 2 years now I have been living in the truck, sometimes in a hotel in TN and even out of the country (was there for 6 weeks and just came back)... I can get my mail at a po box in TN, that's not a problem, but would like to stop paying GA state taxes and change my documents to TN but without proof of residency such as lease agreement, utility bill... that's not possible... :biggrin_25513: Not to mention that will have to have proof of physical address in order to get another background check for the Hazmat.... :biggrin_25510: This is all a big hassle. I thought about renting a cheap shack for 3 months just to get all this done but is it worthy the hassle?? This system p me off... :biggrin_25510:
