Hopefully I have posted this in the correct forum. If not, Forum Admin-please move as you see fit.

I am in the midst of choosing between two places to get my CDL training. One is a school, the other a company. For one of these, I need to get my physical and drug screen local to me before traveling for the training. I won't go into a long explanation as to why, but time limitations require that I find a local DOT certified Medical Examiner quickly. I have a source for the DOT drug screen if needed.

I have looked extensively online, but I can find only one source that lists a registry, and it only lists a couple of options in my area. Since I live in the DFW Metroplex, I find it hard to believe there aren't more options. Specifically, I live north of Dallas. I am willing to drive, but most convenient to me would be Plano, Allen, Frisco, McKinney, Far North Dallas, or even Carrollton or Lewsiville. I can also just as easily go further north (less traffic)-towards Princeton, Van Alstyne, Celina, Prosper and other areas north of Hwy 380 and/or near I35E or 75N.

Can anyone give me a name or names of docs in any of these areas or point me to a resource where I can find them? Anybody come highly recommended as not being a nitpicker? I would expect a thorough, legal examination; nothing more. As a sidenote, I'm out of contact lenses and have an appt with my eye doctor Saturday, so I can have that info available in the event one of the docs doesn't have the capability (I hear some don't and send you elsewhere).

As I said, I'm sort of stuck working with a short schedule. I'd like to wrap this up by Sept. 25th.

    Thanks!

Whats the worry? The school or company will have their own doctor or clinic to use. Don't waste any money until they tell you where to go. Case in point. I paid for my own DOT the last time I was due but my last company wouldn't use my DOT and had ME pay for THEIR doctor!
But to answer your actual question look under medical walk in clinics and they should say if they DOT qualified. It's a selling point with them!

I appreciate the walk-in clinic tip. I will check that out. I'm thinking the yellow pages now that you mentioned checking out their ads. I just thought somebody in this area might know of a local doc who is good and I can get into in time.

I'm not "worried" so much as I am trying to be fully prepared for either option I choose. As I said, I have a time crunch issue, and one of the two options I am considering requires me to get my physical and drug screen locally before leaving for training. Because of some things I have going on, I do not have the luxury of waiting to make sure that is the option I choose before getting a physical locally. If I wait, it won't be an option anymore. They are not going to tell me where to go, I am going to decide which option I want to go with. I already know what both expect me to arrive with and what preparations are expected. One wants the physical already done, the other doesn't. I'm going to fully comply with the required to-do lists for both until I end up at one of them. To me, it's not wasting money even if I end up with the other option who has their own doc and medical clinic. I am fully aware I may end up paying twice for a physical and have to take two of them. I'm ok with that. We're talking about $75-$150 for the physical. I know some companies that will train you for your CDL have medical clinics either onsite or nearby the terminal. Some don't, and require you to have all that done prior to final approval.

So, you may be right, I may end up spending money I didn't have to spend. But if I get a job out of it with either company, it will not be wasted money the way I look at it. Besides.....what is worse? Traveling cross country to attend a school and being put on medical hold for something you didn't foresee and then sent home (an expense), or knowing you're already past the medical hurdles before you get on the bus?

I can understand your point, and I know not everyone would approach it the way I am. I've just got some extenuating circumstances preventing me from making my final decision until the end of the week, and it's possible I'd be starting at either place the following Monday. I'd just like as many posts with options as possible in the next 36 hours so that Monday morning I can get on the phone and make an appointment somewhere.

If I didn't have these extenuating circumstances cutting my time short and forcing me to wait to make the decision, I would just wait and do what is necessary.

Here is a clinic in North Dallas that does DOT physicals for CDL. Nice office, short wait, and reasonable prices. AND open on Saturdays!

This is exactly what I was hoping I'd get by way of a reponse. Thanks a bunch, Rector. I'll be on the phone with them in the morning.

I need a little more help. I contacted the clinic that Rector gave me the link to. When I asked the assistant on the phone some questions about how long does it take before I get my medical card, she acted confused and told me that I had to bring the card in, that the doctor would provided the long form and that he would sign my card, but that they don't provided the card. I tried to explain that I was a new driver and didn't have a card, but she was undaunted in telling me to bring my card. Now I'm confused.

Am I supposed to show up with a blank medical card? It would seem unlikely that there are blank medical cards out there floating around, too much opportunity for fraud. I would've thought only DOT certified doctors had the blank cards.

Can someone help me with this?

Called mine here in Colorado and she asked if I was already a driver or if this was a new physical. I'd assume that the one I'm going to gives the card to me. Maybe it was her first day?
