What's acceptable, Whats not. As far as what to do and dropping trailer bobtailing to an eatery/wallyworld, etc.. My trainer literally wouldnt even leave consignee if he didnt have to if he was going to sit for a couple days, let alone drop a trailer and bobtail anywhere... Last guy I was with, we did drop once or twice to get some grub, but I am kinda nervous about doing it on my own and Codriver isnt even interested either.
This weekend is going to be my first of really laying over anywhere(cept training and when truck was broke down for six days.)
Here we are in Miami, 4 miles from the coast and only a handful from South beach.... Small truck stop is the only one in Miami my company authorizes us to Deadhead to, parking is 15 bucks a day.. Im not even sure how we are going to handle that, as I dont think the company will compensate for it. Place allows dropping trailer and its mty and the place is semisecure.....
Anyways, my codriver.... We work good together... He's content to just play dead in the truck for 3 days... I want to get away... There is some tension over this.
I don't know. i don't have the option to go home.... What to do guys do when you get laidover? Its a lil rainy here stopped about ten minutes ago I took half hour walk early this afternoon, if Im not going to have a load... Id like to be able to pass some time, the computer helps for sure... But hell, Ive never been to Miami, lol Guess I could call a cab to do things... But if I could bobtail to a decent spot that would be better.
Layover?

God that place sux, I feel for ya. Yeah, your trailer is pretty safe there, since your empty. But be careful, lotsa thieves around there....

Sorry, I am not a driver...yet...I am trying to decide whether to go to a cdl school or not. But your situation is interesting. I want to see what experienced drivers say since I am trying to learn as much as possible.

Take a bus if you can't afford a cab and go to the beach and hang out. That's what I would do. No way I sit in that crappy truck stop 3 days.
Google
miamidade.gov transit home
First link at the top is the bus schedule.REDD and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
Do exactly that! -
sitting at a truck stop for 3 days alone would suck, but i think i could manage it if i had to
but sitting with another person, especially one i dont know very good....that just seems impossible to me -
yep if ya can I would get out and make the most of it

I just did a lot of work down in Miami, not a very safe place. Bud of mine a Cuban guy was to meet me to open some gates so i could load. Told me not after 6 p m he said it was a grave yard down were i was and wanted nothing to do with the area at night. There a a few safe areas in Miami but be careful at night. You can be downtown in a nice area go around a corner and think you are in another world. Go to south Beach much safer than Miami. Hell is was on a job site on N Miami Ave in broad daylight the pulled a gun on a guy and robed him. They even stole a Grove crane from my customer drove it right of the job over the holiday., Be safe

If you do drop your trailer, it goes without saying - use a king pin lock! It's not a guarantee but a preventative. If you've got a van - back up against a fence or some other object that will prevent the rear doors from openning.
Plan ahead, be safe and enjoy! -
Out on 41 there is a casino that allows for truck parking. Also has a little fuel stop across the way. If you get a room there you can ask the hotel management to drop the trailer so you can go explore. I never had a prob with that. Or leave the truck at the truck stop, rent a car and get a room. Enterprise does pick up at truck stops.
Layovers can be fun, but usually it takes money to have fun. Not many places in Miami (South Beach, beaches in general, shopping, etc.) have room for trucks, even bobtails.
And with the whole dropping trailer and bob tailing thing.... depends on your companies policies. My company says no "unauthorized use of company equipment". But what they don't know won't hurt them.
