Ol' guy needing trucker's input

I'm 70 years old and have always dreamed of driving a truck cross country. I love road travel. Each year for the last six years, I've left the rock for two to three months and traveled the mainland on a motorcycle. Been to most every state including Alaska, along with parts of Canada and Mexico. I've been rained on, sleeted on, hailed on, snowed on, and caught in a cyclone once, so I know road conditions can be bad at times even for truckers. My question: Do you think I'm too old to start driving? It would be from scratch because I don't even have a CDL. Do you think I would be employable at my age? I love being on the road so much, I'd be willing to just work for food and lodging. What the hell would I do with the money? So old, I don't need much. By the way, body is good and mind works okay.

You are only as old as you feel. When I went to school (8 yrs ago) there was a fellow in my class, I dont remember his exact age, but he was over 70 and this was company sponsered training to boot. He passed the class and went on to work for them. Good luck with whatever you decide.

There are a lot of drivers out there with your status. As long as you can pass all the requirements I would say go for it. I would suggest something in a van with no touch freight though. I would stay away from flats at your age. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hey there,
If your health is reasonably good I say go for it. Maybe even talk with some companies first. The company hubby and I are leased on with have many older drivers, one that I know of is 83 and still driving full time. I have met 2 others that are in their 70's.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide!

Age is just a number. As long as you are physically and mentally able, go for it. What is the alternative, rotting away? Getting out there and doing what you love will make you younger in the long run. Jump in with both feet and good luck.

Thanks to all of you that have replied, so far. Look forward to more words of encouragement. Have been spending some time researching the web on becoming a trucker and as you must know, there's a ton of it available. Shouldn't have any trouble meeting the medical requirements. However, if my blood pressure is taken by a young beauty, I might fail.

I have to admit, the first 2k miles were the hardest. Had to wait for calm seas and service stations were few and far between.
Any recommendations from you guys and gals out there will be greatly appreciated.
