Independent or Large Company

At this point, would you rather work for someone like JB Hunt or remain independent and contract with Landstar?

The best in my opinion is to work for a company that does not make their revenue from the truck.

The smaller the company the more they rely on their trucks running so many miles a week to make it work. On the other hand a bigger company usually don't have your best interests at heart. "GasHauler" is right, if the company relys soley on their trucks then your options will be very limited. If a company has trucks as a sideline you probly do okay with them. I hope this helps and gives you some direction and insight. Good Luck.
