| Hope you realize that even a hard shoulder can be bad at times. snow could be hiding a sudden drop-off, rain could soften a hard sholder and the side of the road is not ever a good place to park! Only use the shoulder in an emegancy! |

| Chilliwag Of course, the only use for a shoulder is to cry on. In other words, if I'm on the shoulder, I'm probably crying! (that would be bad - does horrible things to my beard!) But the question wasn't about whether or not to use the shoulder, but about what the various numbers of reflectors on the posts might mean |

| This is another one of those things that may or may not be true depending on where you are. I've personally not heard of this before, but even if it is true in one state, that doesn't mean it is true in the next one.

| Yeh, just remember we can't get all of the states to mark the roads with standard mile markers, something to think about in California. |

| I rather thought that might be the case - state-by-state and no standardization. As for Kalifornia, I refuse to drive there, so it's not a problem for me |

| I have heard this before and I know some are numbered for map location reference points as on a blueprint.I DON'T know if its true.I do agree that all states are different as far as the way that DOT maintenance runs things.
