I promise to keep it simple.

1.Attempted assault.In Michigan it's aggravated assault,there is no attempted assault statute.Code number 750.82.
2.Yes,it's a felony, but it beats what you were originally charged with.
3.Can a convicted felon drive a CMV and obtain a license?Yes,as long as the crime did not envolve the operation of a CMV.FMCSA regulations state this rule.
4.Can I leave the state while on probation? No.Not without court permission.Michigan probation has different levels of contact for probationers depending on the crime and the length of probation. In the beginning, proably weekly visits, later you may arrange phone calls or mailings.Talk to your probation officer.Besides trying to keep you out of trouble, they are also there to find you gainful employment.
5.Will someone hire me?Maybe.I don't advocate hiring firms but I did see one.Truckers Dispatch. They did have some answers about felons and hiring placement.Do a search for them and call.It can't hurt.
6.Unpaid lawyers fees?Get them paid off or at least attempt to.A bad credit report(unpaid debt)can kill your job chances just like a bad DMV record.Future employers equate a good credit history to someone that is dependable.
5.If you can't drive out of state because of probation, drive instrastate.Good luck.

Well,at least I tried to keep it simple.

I was in your situation. Now I can tell you that in the state of Kentucky I recieved permission from my probation officer to leave the state as an OTR driver. I had a pretty decent relationship with my P.O. however and that could really make a big difference. Also I got my first job back in the day with Dick Simon and they would hire just about anyone who came along but it did get me started and I thank them for the chance to get into the industry. Hope that helps a little.

keep your head up

I, feel your pain. I'm a trucking school gradute with plus 5 good driving points, but I committed a felony 11 years ago (Malicious Wounding) in Va. I have had a very difficult time getting any companies to give me a shot. I've only been able to get Class B work (Dump truck or Cement truck) and I really want OTR experience.I got my schooling 16 months ago and my career has only been local stuff with crappy pay. Just keep trying and a door will eventually open for people like us. I pray that your situation gets better just as I hope for myself

If you call a big trucking company, what ever the recruiter tells you probably is not accurate. It is VERY common in this industry for a new hire to be approved for hiring over the phone and then be turned down after you arrive at the main terminal for oreintation/hiring. And I'm talking about after a person has been 100% honest about things that might disqualify them from being hired. Driver recruiters are in the same catagory with snake oil salesmen and used car salesmen. Be careful, good luck.

A friend of mine who went to the same truck school I did was on probation for a felony, transportation of narcotics. He was able to get a job at the same small trucking company that I went to work for as my first OTR job and is still there 4 yrs latter.
