CDL Question - Truckers' Trucking Forum

Hey all. Wasnt sure where else to put this so I will ask here. I have a current valid Class A CDL with Hazmat and Passenger endorsements from Texas. I used to drive OTR, but have recently reenlisted in the Army and currently reside in Georgia. Now once I come home from deployment, I am getting a motorcycle endorsement added to my license, which will require me to get a Georgia license.

Now my question is, will my CDL transfer over from Texas to Georgia without having to retake all my tests? I want to keep my CDL if possible, since I am looking at getting back into driving when I get out in a few years. I have looked on the Georgia DMV website and couldnt find anything about transferring it from another state. Does anyone have any helpful info? Thanks in advance.

Not sure about the Passenger endorsement, but you will have to retake the written test for the HazMat. Since I no longer carry that one, I don't know how things work as far as the background check when transferring your CDL to another state. I'm sure someone else will be able to answer the part about the passenger endorsement and background check.

When does your license expire ? Most states will waive renewal requirements for servicemen . If you stayed in TX and were away when it expired TX would renew it no problem . GA could possibly not renew it .

If GA is anything like MI you will have to take the written test only for both cdl and hazmat...
Try looking at the Georgia Secretary Of State website for an answer.

To my knowledge you should be able to transfer ALL non-Hazmat endoresements ok you just pay the fees and provide whatever proof of residency that your particular state requires. As for Hazmat if I remember correctly due to changes in the last few years it is no longer easily transferable from state to state. You will always have to take the written test again however in regards to the background check if you still have your documentation where they cleared you then you should ask how old it has to be before they will not honor it anymore. I know in Virginia they said as long as it was within 2 or 3 years I believe old then you were ok just take the written test but I cannot comment for each state. Hope that helps and hopefully it will save you a little bit of time in the long run.

When my husband just transferred his CDL from California to Nevada, they did not require any retests at all, except the eye test. Apparently they don't require a retest if your license (any class) is under 2 years old.

It doesnt expire until 2011, but once I add a motorcycle endorsement I would be required to get a new license since I wont be in Texas. I dont think GA would refuse it, but I have been wrong before.

At the most, you will probably have to take the written test for the hazmat. That was the only test I had to do when I switched from Wisconsin to Florida. That was before the background check bit for the hazmat. When I moved back to Wisconsin, I would have had to retake the hazmat test, but I didn't bother as I didn't plan on using it anyway. I also didn't want to spend the money on the background check. Your best bet would be to call the Georgia DMV and ask someone about it.

I transfered my cdl from North Carolina to South Carolina and I didn't have to take any tests...all I did was to show proof of residency and pay the fees to have endorsements put on the new cdl...altogether it took about 15 minutes and I was wlking out with a new cdl in my hand...I only paid $35.00 for the changing....I hope this helps you..

If you're in the military, you should be able to keep your Texas license, you can get a motorcycle license in Georgia as long as you only have one CDL.
