I know a lot of companies do random drug screening even after being hired on, they will also do a drug test if you ever get in an accident whether your fault or not.

After your pre-hire....drug testing is RANDOM. Meaning they can do it any time, without warning. Random tests don't have a "reason" per se...they cannot single you out for anything, your name comes up like a lottery drawing. I think it's 25% of the workforce that has to be tested, quarterly.... I've always gotten a random about once a year, but an old co-driver of mine got tested 3 times in 6 months.

You'll also be tested in the event of an accident. Even a fender-bender. Even if it's not your fault. I believe federal law says post-accident drug testing is mandatory if there are any injuries, or if any vehicle is "disabled" and has to be removed with a tow truck. Pretty much ANY collision between the front of a car & truck will result in the car being towed away due to radiator damage.

Also, if you injure yourself on the job & make a claim to the company, they will usually send you for testing. My husband got the tip of his pinky finger caught in his trailer door latch somehow, ripped off a good chunk of his finger....he reported it & had to go pee in a cup when he saw the doctor.

I'm not judging you, and I don't have a moral problem with marijuana, personally....BUT I will say this is NOT the career to be in, if you want to indulge in illegal drugs. Even if you do it only off-duty, even if you're *never* under the influence behind the wheel.....it is a LOT of risk, for your job. THC stays in your system for 14-28 days, depending on use.

Think about it....you smoke a joint or 2 on your week off. First day back to work, some half-blind little old lady rear-ends you at a stoplight. She's groaning about neck trouble & her car has to be towed away. Not your fault....but Federal law says you've got to report for drug testing. Suddenly, you test positive for marijuana....and the accident becomes YOUR fault. In an instant, you've lost your job and your CAREER....it'll be 10 years before an indicent like that is no longer on your record when you apply for a driving job. Even if you just get hit with a random, you'll be fired if you test positive, and it'll be on your DAC for 10 years.

If you are serious about wanting to drive a truck, and you want it to be a job you can count on for income for the long-term, you will want to think very carefully & consider whether the "occasional" recreational joint is really worth the risk. You're a grown person & can make your own choices, but PLEASE just understand how quickly a moment's indescretion can ruin your livelihood.

This is how it will go.

You'll abstain until you get the job. Then you will start again a little bit at a time until you're back full-on smoking. Assuming you don't have any actual accidents, the time until your next random screen, about a year lets say, will define the period of time you had a trucking career.

Oh yeah. And I forgot to mention....if you happen to be in an accident with a fatality. EVEN if it wasn't your fault- say, somebody on the other side of the highway falls asleep, crosses the median and plows into the side of your trailer and dies instantly....IF you test positive for drugs or alcohol, you'll likely go from a non-preventable, no citation accident....to manslaughter, or negligent/vehicular homicide.

You'll do jail time, on top of losing your livelihood. It might seem like a "small" risk- but once you're out on the road long enough, you'll see the aftermath of PLENTY of tragic wrecks- enough to convince you that you are NOT immune....

If you take on driving as a career. You'll have it until your first random, or accident.

And you'll never work again, as a driver at a major company.

Or any company, if the latest bill gets traction.

You have to commit to giving it up, completely.
