Why can't you secure your load?

Sitting here at the Pilot in Houston, I was watching the trucks leaving the fuel island. Watched a skateboard go by with 3 coils, palletized, eye-to-the-sky. One in front, one in the middle, one on the back.

...2 straps on each. In an X over the top.

At least if they move, he'll likely be the first to know.

Any of you guys call in the drivers to mention their securement? I've got a driver's info written down who I saw get out of his truck, walk to the back, and take a leak between the two trailers. This was at a Road Ranger. I shall look up that company now.

Reminds me of the guy we brokered a die to out of Tennessee- got a call that he turned left at the light, and the die slid off the trailer onto the road- right out from under the STRAPS he used to fasten a 40,000lbs. die to his trailer. Then he left the scene to go back to the customer to tell them what happened. WTF?!?!

Best part- the driver wasn't just any driver- it was the owner of the company who was driving because his operator needed a couple of days off. :O

Nobody carries chains?????
I chain crane mats and I have seen drivers just use a few straps.
I chain coils and use protectors and never worry about losing a load.
I'd chain-up pipe but they get a little nervous about scratching up the the wrap...

Our straps are rated the same as our chains. They'll hold just as much weight, even though the feeling of steel will make you feel better about it. On most of our coils we're not even allowed to use chains. The only ones we can use chains on are the "shotgun" coils, which we also use straps with. The problem isn't what they use to secure it, it's how much securement and how it's placed.

Did you know its illegal to use a strap thru a coil?? I've seen a lot of guys do it!!

Me personally I use chains, part of the reason is I have a covered wagon but the thought of someone being able to cut thru a strap witha pocket knife is alittle unsettling to me!

Chains don't stretch, straps do. Chains give obvious visual clues to weakness if you bother to look, straps weaken over time from simple exposure.

Any company or shipper who tells me I cant chain a coil of steel or anything else I decide needs chains can find someone else to carry their load.

Try running Kalifornia with straps instead of chains.

I won't haul coils without chains.

Just so good ole fashion common sense!

Sorry but anyone who would use a nylon strap to try to secure anything more than a 10k lbs coil isn't very bright.

Oh, notice how in that link you posted it says "tiedowns"? Where in the fmcsa does it decribe tiedowns?
