I got my CDL B when I was 51. I'm 58 now and driving a Freightliner Columbia with a 24' bed hauling constuction supplies and materials all over eastern New York and western Massachusets and Vermont. I've been with this company since '03. Getting the first job is the hardest, especially in this economy. But don't rule out local driving. Or working for a temp agency. Temp work is a good way to get your foot in the door and show 'em what you got.

I am 58 and just starting out. Laid off from constuction last November. Decided to try something new. Age wasn't a problem.

I'd think companies would prefer older people because they may be more stable. Passing the DoT physical would seem to be the only hurdle. Assuming you don't have any medical disqualifers like disease or high BP I wouldn't think they're be a problem.

Stress is a killer. Can you handle stress? If you can't, you will be like so many long time truckers that are weather beaten big time. I'm talking about the ones that are, say 45, but look like they're 60. Years and years of minimal sleep, lousy eating habits, smoking cigs, way too much coffee and that terrible stress factor that comes with the job. Go to any truck stop and you'll see them shuffling around, you'll know what I mean.

I'm 48 and I want to start school as soon as the WIA approves it. The way I think of it is that when the economy comes back (maybe sooner) I'm way better off with a CDL than without a CDL. Btw, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the demographic for 2006-2013 is males between 30 and 60. Good Luck.

I am 24 started when i was 18 no kids few girls ''friends'' haha ,always drove solo 48 startes started with a freightshaker, but my heart since i was lil was a pete 379 loaded with all the works and i done just that and i still enjoy it even though i sometimes got hated on for having a nice ride and being young driver ,but i impress alot of drivers pulling into a dock or truck stop , i been through it all from toranados to black ice to very back thunderstorms etc ,it gots its ups and downs with people and etc ,but its the way of trucking i learned and i still learn from older drivers i meet here and there and sometimes older drivers ask me for advice ,so i say no matter what age you are doesnt matter you can do it and i plan on keep doing it for a good while.
