It would depend on if the [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. was rented for commericial use or for personal use. If a trucking company has to call Penske and rent a 25 foot box truck, and has to display their company name on the unit then it would have to stop at the weight station. It also depends on the truck that you rent, if you are renting a U-haul without air brakes or a GVW over 26,000 lbs when it would be considered for personal use. If was equipped with air brakes, which would require the driver to have a CDL, and you were grossing at more than 26,000 lbs it would be considered commericial. But that is only my take on the situation. It would be best to get the information before you rent or when you rent a truck from a truck renting/leasing company.
But whenever I would be in doubt I would follow the truck with you horeses as they Will have to stop, in any case if the driver pulling your animals is a Seasoned Trucker he should be able to inform you as well. also with this being new for you be carful of any cross winds make sure both hands on the wheel. as the wind can make you drift in your driving. keep it safe as someone also mwentioned you rather be late than ahving the highway patrol having to inform your family of any bad news....safe driving to you</SPAN itxtvisited="1">

I'm sure that you do not have to stop at the scales with a Budget 16 Foot truck. I am renting one of the same and have checked on this.

I would like to comment about the driver not being familiar with the truck and night driving. They should start out during the daylight hours.

Arizona, any and all trucks over 10,000 lbs gross, must stop at scales. Are you sure that you're sure ? You can get current info by calling the authorities in the states you're going thru.

Well, I'm sure we've succeeded in confusing the heck out of her by now. Let's simplify by saying that if she's following the horse hauler where he pulls in she follows. No harm, no foul.

As for fuelling, since the truck is gas, she fuels out front with the cars since there are no "gas" pumps back with the big rigs.

BTW, she may get pulled over in KY anyways. They're doing one of their drug interdiction sweeps right now and U-Haul trucks are one of their targets. Did you know KY is one of the main drug distribution points in the US??

I have to make the trip without any prolonged stops because I have a company shipping my 3 horses at the same time, and I want to get to kentucky either before, or at the same time as them.
Some things I am worried about:
Weigh stations - I don't think I have to go through them but couldn't find a definite answer anywhere.
Gassing up - the truck is gas, not diesel, so does that mean I just gas up in the same place as the 4 wheelers? Or is there usually a pump with gas for truckers?
Clearance - especially when gassing up, how do I know if the roof is high enough?
I know probably every roof will be high enough and I'm just being irrational about everything. I've never even driven further than about 70 miles lol. I also have to drive through the night, I will probably be leaving around 5pm. Any advice? Or just tell me something to calm my nerves!
Most likely you won't have to worry about weigh stations (ask the rental company to be sure). The company shipping your horses...on the other hand might have to depending on their equipment. You have a negative Coggins for them, right? Hopefully they have everything in order but there are some not so smooth operators in the livestock hauling business.
The truck's clearance should be posted on the dashboard as a reminder and yes you get the fuel at any gas station as long as you can fit under the canopy, which most likely you will. Most places have the clearance posted on the canopy somewhere.

My understanding is you don't stop at scales unless you have commercial tags on your vehicle. Might be wrong though. I have moved across country in larger rental trucks without stopping at scales, and had no problems. Not sure if locality would make a difference.
