Florida has night time security in their rest areas.

Some northeast states staying in a rest area increases your chances of a DOT inspection..

It's a shame that everyone wants to complain and pass rules about tired truckers, but closing rest areas seems to be the only way some states can save money.

Excellent rest area(s) on I-65 about halfway through KY. Looks to be brand new facilities. TONS of truck parking, super clean, staffed 24/7. If they had WiFi (especially free) I might not have ever moved on :)

I like rest stops better than truck stops. With that being said though I have had a few incidents at rest stops. They aren't the safest places but really where is? Truck stops can be just as dangerous. I like the rest stops though because they are quieter and easier and quicker to get in and out of. I think its a little strange though that people in 4 wheelers just pull in and sleep in their cars. On the way to the bathroom you walk by and see everyone in the car snoring and drooling all over. Kind of easy prey if you were looking for trouble. I would say get a cheap motel but that's probably not much better! Hmmmm!

i sleep a lot in rest areas...im mostly west and they tend to have a good amount of parking room. state troopers do pop in and check things out sometimes, guess it just depends where. not everywhere i reckon.
i like them because they are quiet, and depends but most i find are easy enough to get in and out. some out east and the ones where its parallel style parking spots im not a big fan of.

oh i will say one reason the cops might have been in a few i have seen were to write tickets to the guys who go park in the 4 wheel spots. but i have yet to figure out why some of these places have like 100 car spots.

I do remember a very nice area in the south patrolled 24/7 by Highway patrol. The young all business patroller told me the moment I pulled in that I wasn't allowed to be there more than two hours. And sure enough, after two restless hot humid mosquito infested hours, he came knocking on my van and told me it was time to leave. Didn't matter that I was hitting the road tired and sleepy! I did feel safe though! He was so over efficient that nothing was going to get past him.

I actually prefer the rest areas NOT patrolled. For some reason as a single man in a van, I tend to cause suspicion. All I want is to see the country in an affordable way - hence sleeping in my van. The best places I found to sleep are mid to large sized hotel/motel parking lots. They have security patrols, so safe(r) but have too many guests to note one extra vehicle parked in their lot. And since I can close my the curtains, etc., I don't have to worry about being found out.

I've never noticed anyone staring at me. Usually, like in a crowded elevator, everyone tends to avoid eye contact. They're sure not the friendliest places - but I guess that's not their purpose. Still, it would normally seem a good place to stretch the legs, make small talk with fellow travelers, learn road conditions, etc.

I really like the rest stops in MN. As they are spaced 45 miles apart and are quick and easy to get into and out of. They have parking for trucks.

Missouri on the other hand does not have any rest stops for trucks that I have seen.

I feel very safe at them in Iowa, MN, and SD...of course these are very low crime rate states, so most folks feel safe at them 24/7. I even slept outside one night at one of the rest stops on a nice summer evening.

I drive in rural areas, and what crime there is occurs in the urban areas, where everyone keeps their cars locked. Where as in the rural areas people leave the keys in their unlocked cars and pickups....ya gotta luv the rural areas.
