What Bret said. I worked for an LTL for a few years. Our damaged freight was not usually edible.:biggrin_2552: Seen everything from appliances to coffins that were damaged in transit. Shipped to a salvage outfit in SLC for disposal.

Anybody want to buy a damaged coffin at a discount rate?:biggrin_2551: :yes2557:

I once picked up an empty container at the Swift headquarters in Phoenix. While there I had lunch at "The Jake Brake Cafe" on the grounds. They had a store there where they sold stuff that had been cleaned up in wrecks where their trucks were involved. The day I was there they had gallons of bleach for a nickle. Check into that. Dont know if you have to have a CDL to shop there. Just someplace in your area for you to check out.

Used to be an Empire Beef company in Rochester, NY that would sell off all their damaged product once a week. They would allow all the drivers and warehouse employees get their pick first then they would open it to the public for 1 hour. Whatever was left would go to the local food cupboards.
Bought lots of steaks, ground beef, and chicken from them dirt cheap. They had tons of other stuff as well, pretty much anything you can find in the frozen food section of the grocery store they had. I heard they have other locations outside of NY now since this 1 closed, I wonder if they do the same thing.

depends on the value, quantity, and item. The company I work for, if the broker tells us to dispose of a damaged item, they will often give it to us drivers first, then pitch it or donate it. Over the years, I've brought home a case of Margarita mix, spaghetti sauce, onions, etc. Anything of decent value (tv's, electronics, etc.) get's shipped via LTL back to the shipper. All per forwarders instructions.

Years ago, we used to get container loads of bottle water for Costco. They would put 22 pallets in to fill the container, Costco would only order 20 pallets, and refuse the other 2. At one point, we had 16 pallets sitting in our shop. I took home 20 cases in one trip. We donated the rest to a charity.

Long time ago a friend of mine delivered local for coca cola. He was always selling cases of cans that were slightly dented but could not be sold. About half price from the stores. Not coca cola addict anymore!

I always have leftover liquid oxygen...But at -270 degrees and constantly boiling off, it's a little hard to bring home. But, when I used to haul fuel and had "retains" and a 5 gallon jerry can, I never had to pay for gas.

Just last week I had a case of coconut cream pies in a torn box. Kept one and gave the rest to the guys at the Blue Beacon in Jackson MS.

This morning it was a dented corner on a case of pork ribs. Gave the whole case to the shop here at the TA. 27 lbs of store packaged cuts.

I make one announcement over the CB. No takers, or if I have to put up with any suspicious trucker syndrome, then I take the stuff inside and offer it up to the employees. I don't have time for twenty questions, or lazy guys who want ME to swing by their truck so they can have a look.

Of course this is after I've got the ok to pitch the product by the customer. There have been times I have been directed to food banks, another receiver, and even back to the shipper.

if you are in central florida area we have people who will buy this product straight out . They in turn sort and box it and give it to different charities and food banks . we recently had 3 pallets of sugar rejected due to bottom layers being damaged by forklift company told us to trash it. a guy at a truck stop gave us a number and they paid us 1.00 a bag for all even damaged ones and picked it up. Truck got unloaded, company did not complain and the guys were happy to get it. truck stop definately did not want it in their dumpster. and we had a nice dinner and hotel for the night.
