    Hey everyone,

I'm a dentist in Colorado and I'm considering starting a mobile dental practice focused on providing affordable, urgent care at truck stops. I would accept Medicaid. But, otherwise it would be fee for service. Cash, credit, and possibly EZPay. However, I would file insurance paperwork for you. I would offer limited services. Mostly extractions, root canals, simple fillings and possibly simple and deep cleanings. The cost of these services would meet or beat other practices prices (including Comfort Dental).

I would appreciate your thoughts on how this could be done to serve you best. For example, would a mobile service that could be at a location for a week or so and then move to another location be better than a fixed office at one of the bigger stops (Lamar or Commerce City)? What hours/days would work best for you? I would like to minimize the cash in the clinic for security reasons. Are credit card payments convenient? Speaking of security I'm a married, middle-aged woman. How worried should I be about security? Mind you I've worked on an ambulance and have been a volunteer firefighter, so I'm not exactly a prima donna.

In any case, a Google search shows there are (or were) only three other truck stop dental practices in the US. So I would think that there is still an unmet need for dental services. Also, it seems like a good niche for me since I mostly like to do emergency treatment and because I've always liked traveling. Besides working on an ambulance in Denver, I was also a chauffeur for a couple of years. In fact, at one point I considered becoming a trucker. So please give me your thoughts good or bad.

    Thanks!

truckers hours are not 9-5 jobs ;). so you"ll just have to pick hours YOU want to work and let the drivers work around that.

Most people desire to use their regular dentist, becaue they know them. A dental practice in a truck stop might work, but, you would probably be doing emergency type stuff, IE, driver has terrible tooth ache and needs a dentist NOW. It should be a permanent location with regular hours and "on call" too. You won't be able to have a full staff, because you won't have enough clientele to support it.

My last three companies didn't even offer dental insurance. I agree with Allow Me and the majority of the clients would be emergency procedures. I used a dentist one time on the road and was highly greatful as anyone would be with a toothache. :)

I think you would do better stationary as truckers would get to know where you are. Truckstops are pretty safe from robbery. There are too many people and too many eyes. Plus cash flow wouldn't be so great that you couldn't easily conceal it and be discreet. Debit or credit would work. Many drivers even have their personal accounts with Comdata which they can issue you a verified check.

I never liked the downtown truckstops. I always stayed outside Denver when I could at Johnson's Corner in Johnston, CO north of Denver or in Limon east of Denver. Lamar would greatly limit your traffic. I would stick with I-70 or I-25.

Are you open to relocate or do you want to stay in CO? Knoxville, TN would be a good place for a trucker's dentist. Major truck traffic there and plenty of rotten teeth! :) Exit 369 has three big truck stops and several more in the area.

    Good Luck.

That idea might work. Get with a large truckstop by the Interstate. Most drivers have a credit card. Very many drivers eligible for Tricare or would that be a paperwork nightmare? A Tricare sign on your van would garner more customers I think.

Ask you question on the "Experienced Drivers" thread.

Thanks for all the great information guys!

Sounds like a little stationary clinic would be the way to go. I wasn't aware of Comdata or that many drivers have Tricare. I have been signed up with Tricare before. But, I don't know how much of a paperwork nightmare it is since there was front office staff to deal with it. With this practice it would be me and one assistant. So, we really need to minimize the paperwork.

As far as location goes, I'm pretty much stuck in Colorado (not that it's a bad place to be stuck). My husband has a job in Colorado Springs and it's very difficult for him to find other jobs because of the nature of his work. I did read about Johnson's Corner, good to know that might be a good one. I've been assuming that the Fountain stop that's south of Springs is too small. What do you guys think? I could actually live at home if I set up there. Otherwise, maybe Limon would be good.

If I ask this question in the experienced drivers forum will it be a double post? I don't want to do that. Maybe I could just ask them to have a look over here...

    Once again, thanks everyone.

Any medical care is a good thing for us, especialy in a large truckstop! Ive had to go as much as 20 miles away to find a doctor and a place to park, Dentists are even harder to find. Ts are pretty safe depmds on the area out of the city would be best safer more traffic and less BS. Money Comcheck paypal CC.
A stationary place would be best we would be able to find you and know where you would be. hours of service: some time between noon and 9 pm puts you in the window for day and night drivers
    GOOD LUCK WITH IT

There is a dentist at Iowa 80 in Walcott, IA, unless that has changed. He works 8:30 to 2:30, Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays.
