    Hi,
Would any of you, professional truckers be willing to answer a few questions I have regarding your profession?
I'm writing a book about a female truck driver who gets hijacked by terrorists. Need answers for some logistics,
    and driving routes.

Would appreciate it if you'd be willing to exchange a few emails.

    Thanking you in advance.
    :)

I am a female driver, and yes it can be quite terrifying at times to be out there all alone especially in some area of big cities like Atlanta Ga, Chicago Ill and parts of NY,NY. I law should be passed allowing drivers to be allowed to carry weapons (guns). Only if they pass background checks of course in all 50 states. I personally would feel a lot safer. As for safety on the road you have a more realistic tale if the driver was raped and then murdered in her truck while sitting at a busy truck stop. this happens a lot more then most people realize. Look in newspaper archives in or around major cities(Indianapolis 2000 or 2001) I don't remember the exact date but i remember stopping there only to see crime scene tape and police climbing all over the truck, only to be told by the staff that another woman driver had been raped and murdered in her own truck. Times are scarier know back then if a person yelled/ screamed for help at a truck-stop especially a woman the cavalry would come even if it was on the road while driving other drivers would come to the rescue, and either run the person off road or block them so the driver could get away. this does not happen like it used too. i could tell you some of my own stories if i had the time. but good luck with the book

Also another problem women drivers have is serious sexual harassment, especially when applying for a job, some employers will even go so far as saying well if you want the job there is a bed in the back, i can guarantee you the job if you make me happy in there. been doing this for 14 yrs, 90% of the time that is basically what is said hard to believe its 2013 huh. Or they (male drivers) think your a lesbian. funny story about that too. Which is a shame statistically women drivers are better drivers. all around. but again good luck with book looking forward to reading it

    Thanks cmajewsk,
I appreciate your detailed response to my post. I do describe constant sexual harassment that female drivers have to endure. Was worried I overdid it, and I'm sure most man are respectful but not always. There are several questions I have for you, the most pressing would be (if you can help me), is that my character gets hijacked in Stuart, Iowa. The destination is Las Vegas. Are there side roads they can take so as not to be spotted by police?
Basically, they're on the run and carrying a bomb in the truck.

Not gonna comment on the sexual harrasment--Since Im a guy--Im sure it exists--as for back roads--lots of ways to make that run--stayin on fairly well traveled roads(mostly non-interstate)where you could blend in--course ifn you are talkin--the truck IS being searched for with alerts etc....that is a totally different story---and of course in Today's world--just about impossible in all reality--but in terms of fiction--well anything is possible LOL..
But it ian't terribly hard to make that run--without crossing a scale or POE....

    RickG Thanks this.

    'olhand, Hi...
Thanks. Yup it is fiction, but I'm trying to stay as close to the truth as possible. Right now I have her going on I80 switch over to I70 to US-89 to I-15 . She does come across a scale..no problem there. But they are trying to stay out of the way as much as possible. Does that route sound plausible?

A semi on a secondary road would be very conspicuous . The best way to go undetected is to highjack a generic fleet truck , change the markings (New carrier name , DOT number , and vehicle ID , along with forged shipping papers ) and just run down the interstate blending in with other trucks .

Tryin to read between lines here and makin couple of assumptions--Im thinking you mean 80 to 76 to 70 as your switch over to 70? No? as for 89 Are you thinking because in Utah 89 and 70 run together for a while? So I am not clear.....
Now as for stayin out of sight--either way thats not a good plan--too many scales and problems in ne--not to mention Co POE....
So if Im tryin to ease around things(and it does add some miles etc..)but....
Id look at droppin straight south on 71 into MO--then 36 west into KS--then south on 77--to 70--then 70 west to 40@Oakley--40west into CO--to 287-287-south to 50 west to co10-to us 160-west to Durango-south on 550 to farmington--west on 64--back onto 160 in Az--there is an old scale on 550s and 64/160 west(but both just wide spots and rarely if ever open)160 back around to 40@flag-west on 40 to Kingman-then 93 to168into Nv--across 163 to 95 into Vegas.....
Course that would be ifn I ever did anything wrong--which of course I DO NOT and NEVER HAVE--it is after all just fiction--now isn't it?

    Rick,
Some interesting points you make here. Keep in mind, though, she's an owner-operator long-haul truck driver. So she got the job and no one knows where she's delivering except for two people. So I don't know if your suggestion really applies. What say you?
