How long does it take a hazmat truck to leave I-70, go up and over Loveland Pass, and get back onto I-70?
Would it take less time, use less fuel and cause less wear and tear to wait until the top of the hour and just go through the Eisenhower Tunnel?
This is done when Loveland Pass is closed due to snow, rockslides or accident.
Thank you.
Driving hazmat, do you prefer Loveland Pass closed? (I-70 at Eisenhower Tunnel)

The pass is ten miles longer than the direct route, at 30 m/h you get over it in 20 minutes. Even if you average 20 mph you're looking at 20 to 30 minutes extra; but since the pass is closed to allow you to go through the tunnel, isn't the time moot?

Loveland Pass has been cleared of snow and is open again.
I thought it was more than 10 miles out of the way and would take more than a half hour to get back to I-70.

You are right!
Googlearth map indicates (A) to (C) through the tunnel is 11.4 miles taking 11 minutes.
Over Loveland Pass (A) to (C) is 21.1 miles taking 32 minutes to travel.
(Had to do A-B-C to get the route to go over Loveland Pass.)Last edited: Dec 18, 2014

What a pain..

Let's say it takes 30 minutes to transit the pass. If it's closed your journey will take less or the same amount of time 1/2 of the times you show up. That's assuming a random arrival time. The pass is trickier than the tunnel, but shouldn't be seen as a large hardship.

I was once up there in a bad snowstorm and I said, never again. -

They do a pretty decent job of keeping both passes clear during typical snow events, but push comes to shove during a more significant snow event, 70 get's first priority. During a major storm, I'd not want to run over Loveland Pass, period.
