howdy, i work in a truck stop restaurant and have family that drives. every night as i take out the trash and take my non-union allotted smoke break i walk the trucklot checking out the trucks. most of which are idling, now when its freezing or below, or hotter then hell out i understand, i wouldn't want my dad freezing to death or sweating to death in his truck. but what i don't understand is why some drivers are idling when its 40-50 degrees. im not talking about the guys who are taking their 30 but the guys staying for the night. honestly i shouldn't even care"not my fuel, not my truck, not my problem" but i was hoping someone could shed a little light on why some guys idle all night when there's no need?

Do you run your heat at home when its 40 - 50 degree's? Or your AC when its 70 - 80 degree's?

Once I start my day and the truck, the truck never shuts-down until my day is complete. "Wear and tear", don't buy it, more fuel consumption, maybe a little more but I'm never sitting somewhere for more than a half an hour so by my calculations that's about a half a gallon of fuel used which is needed to keep me comfortable I.E. AC, heat and I run at night so I don't want to draw down on the batteries.. More importantly, with my fleets maintenance program, I'm worried it may not start again once I shut it down.

I have an APU but same thing really.
    I like it cool.

And I like to keep my WINDOWS Closed.
Many drivers smoke, and while that's fine with me if they want to ruin their health, I'd rather not breathe it in myself.

Mine ont idle. But I have apu. I was asked same thing by my wife and Ill tell you what I told her my best guess is to keep the batteries charged if they dont have apu.

I sleep with my truck off . Many drivers idle becasuse it is not their money they are burning. Under 20 degrees I will idle.

I idle, it has a little to do with all of the points, it's not my fuel, it helps me sleep, it keeps the temperature set, and I know mine won't start in the morning unless I unplug my cooler and my food is more important than fuel.
