I was just curious about that small "door" on the back of reefer trailers. What are they for?

Yes, it's for ventillation and helps air circulation if you open it.

    Midget access.

In times past, particularly during WWII and the Korean war when many able bodied men were absent from the workplace, the USDA hired only midgets for it's Agricultural Inspection Program, and they would enter the trucks and inspect the loads through the small doors on the back of the trailer. Now, USDA hires full sized people as well, and does not rely solely on midgets, but as a mark of respect and recognition for the service these folks provided to their country in troubling times the trailer manufacturers still install the small doors.

    It's a mark of honor.

They are for ventilation yes... but most commonly used for checking temp. at the rear of the trailer with a thermometer to make sure all is cool:cool:. Most refrigerated carriers require check calls to report temp. of loads daily.

    "Midget access" --- indeed.

Nobody can rightfully accuse you of a lack of humor.
    But, Shux Howdy!
    You almost had me convinced.

I figured it was for those haulin' ice cream bars, so they could grab a sample along the way. You know, just to insure the load was ridin' right. :biggrin_25512:
