    Hello All,
I would like to know the 2008 rules of driving a Semi across the U.S. that is owned privately and not driving for any company. There will be no company logos on the truck, just think of it as a POV. I have the proper license to drive, I just do not drive for any company.
Do I have to stop at all open weigh stations?
Any other restrictions preventing me from just driving a truck?

I would stop at weigh stations and keep a log book, I knew a guy who drove a military truck that was exempt from DOT regulations who got a ticket for passing a weigh station in Virginia. The trooper cited him for failure to obey state traffic control signs that said, "All trucks must enter weight station," even though military trucks are exempt.

Even a 26 foot box truck is required to stop at weigh stations.

Yeah, youbetter stop at the weigh stations or you might spend alot of time going back to them.I`m assuming by private you also mean you are not running Apportioned plates.Should be an interesting trip with lots of stops so you can explain whats going on.Might be easier to write it down and make copies so you don`t get hoarse explaining.

It's no biggie as I can't see it being much different from when I purchased my truck. I drove from Council Bluffs, IA to Calgary, AB via Winnipeg, MB. 1,460 miles ... 600 of which was in the U.S. I was not running for any company at that time. I had two "In Transit" documents (one from IA for the U.S. portion and one from AB for the Canadian portion each one displayed in the window, but not at the same time), but no plates. I had insurance issued in AB. I went through every open scale (I don't recall how many, but there were several). I was never pulled in.

If your semi is NOT FOR HIRE, then you are not subject to commercial driving regulations including the licensing. You can rent a semi for personal use to move yourself if you want and you dont even have to have a CDL. I know somebody who has done it at least twice that I know of, and Penske(where he rented it) told him that since he is NOT FOR HIRE, he was pretty much not subject to any commercial laws. Just like those big busses that people use for Camping--if you notice they all say PRIVATE MOTOR COACH on the door--those people do not have CDL's and they are not subject to COmmercial Regulations of any type such as scales and so forth. If they were a FOR HIRE Motor Coach operation, they would--same with a semi rig.

I disagree with you on the licensing part. You cannot drive, just any vehicle without the proper license, commercial or private. :biggrin_25512: If your going to diseminate information like this, please support it. Like a link to FMCSA website with this said information your putting out.

Here's one thread with some info on it. Scales & Uhauls

If it's over a certain weight, it goes through, whether commercial or not.
