I've heard horror stories of FFE and their POS equipment. Personally, I won't work for a company with the word "express" in their name.(Frozen Food Express) I know it sounds stupid, but the worst companies that I've dealt with through all had "express" in their names. Call me superstitious, call me a nut case-you'd be right on both!

FFE does have a lot of bad equipment and even worse drivers and dispatchers. But to be honest, their rates are some of the highest in the LTL market. Heck their rates are higher than what the company I am leased to charge...and I thought $350 for a single 2000 lbs or less pallet spot out of WI to NJ was high.

Hey there, lots of great information on here!

What type of tires are usually used on Reefers?
Is Thermo King or Carrier the preferred choice for refrigeration units?
What type of axles are generally used on reefers for long hauls?

There are allot of better places to start then Stevens. They are a training company and do not want to be anything more. They will literally PUSH you out the door after a year or 2. they start at .26cpm.

Being from NY if you Dont have a CDL look at Millis Transfer.

Where in NY are you? anywhere near NJ? if so Check out Watkins Shepard Trucking

Also check out WEL Companies and Epes not sure if either hire from your area of NY but both are good companies, Epes will get you home every weekend.

I am from Peterborough, Ontario and I am working on a project partly about what type of reefer would be most time/ money efficient for a long haul trip from British Columbia hauling produce to Toronto, then turning around bringing back frozen meat.

BC to Toronto, are you going to stay north of the US Border?, if so get a 53 foot TRIAXLE Trailer with extra insulation, especially in the floor and doors, it can get mighty cold across the prairie, also get a fuel tank for the thermo king or carrier unit mounted on the front of the trailer, just below the unit. Get micro blu bearings in the trailer axles and put on super singles or smaller 255x70-22.5 tires on aluminmum wheels. Lifting the front and rear axle may be an option to consider.Make sure the gross weight of the trailer is 77,000 lbs, not the standard 68,000. Load it up and go!
