    Indiana tageting reefers

Quite a few news items over the last couple of weeks about Indiana troopers pulling over trucks with refers to check temperatures. A few trucks have had their loads destroyed by health department when determined to be spoiled.
Tippacanoe county (layfayette) on I 65 seems to have the most incidents.
Local TV station WRTV 6 has story on their website today about another two loads said to be spoiled.

"We have run across some companies that try and save a little bit of fuel. These run off the same fuel that their truck runs off of," said ISP Sgt. Rich Myers. "If you shut it off for a while while you're going down the roadway, you're going to save fuel on your truck … but you're going to endanger the load while you're at it."

Oh man that is funny to me

They started doing this last year after they caught Chinese food companies running non working units. Either off or didn't work at all.

i know a few companies that already do that with fresh & frozen loads. they think they're saving fuel on the truck by not running the unit going down the road. how can a reefer with it's own fuel supply on the trailer save fuel on the truck? i have yet to figure that out

Saves the 100 bucks or so everytime they fill the reefer tank. Still a bad idea with a perishable load.
I'm glad many food loads have temp recorders.

i run my unit on continuous whether i got seafood, meat, produce, etc. with this summer heat continuous run is alot easier to maintain @ 0 or below temps than on a cycle; just sayin

I learned a lesson about shutting units off one night in the middle of no-where. Load of produce, I decided to shut engine off. Later I went to start it, and starter went out, could not spin motor over. Had to get an air wrench, put socket on bolt that was on the front of crank shaft, spun it over with the air gun, and it started. This was on an old style Thermo-King. I no longer shut unit off once it starts running. You never know.
