Why can't reefer connect to the tractors power source?

Why don't they make reefers able to connect to the trucks electrical system. I just picked up a reefer that had been allowed to run out of fuel and the battery was to low to turn over the engine when I primed it, so had to wait all day to get into a shop to get the reefer jumped to allow it to start. If it could have connected to my tractor, I could have started it easily. Also my company has idle policies and no APUs, why can't the reefer keep the batteries charged while
    it is running?

Haven't drove a reefer in a few years, but I did jump one from tractor before.

carry jumper cables... you can jump the refer from the truck or if the truck will not start, use the refer to jump the truck... been there and done that.

The unit starter would require a really large wire running through the pigtail to carry the kind of cranking amps it needs.

They make one for that. It's an Aux pigtail that can be used to power a liftgate or such accessories. My Century came with the connector and the pigtail.

Took the words out of my mouth. I've jumped my truck a couple times off the reefer, comes in handy.

I'm about to jump my truck with the reefer. I had to last night as well. Jumper cables are your best friend.

Good point, and I might also add that jumper cables are one tool you don't want to "cheap out" on. Get the best and longest set you can afford, that's available and they may last you. Cheap cables are CHEAP and often don't pass enough voltage [for cranking] for big trucks due to small wire, poor grips, etc. And trucks need the longest cables available often times.

I have a pair (maybe 15 feet?) I bought new at NAPA probably 20 years ago and I think I paid around a $90 then, but they have never let me or others down. I keep mine in their own dedicated storage bag, rolled up neatly.

Good thing my batteries are directly below a reefer unit between the frame rails should it come to that.
