An observation I have noticed recently. Maybe someone else can answer this question, possibly a current Marten driver. We've all seen every company and their brother out there running some form of "aerodynamic" skirting on their trucks, whether its the small airtabs, the complete undertrailer skirt, the in front of the tandems "rubbermaid" tray system, the front trailer fairings or the trailer tails. My understanding, these are all part of the Green Smartway deal, in part, to get into California.
However, Marten Transport goes into California all the time.....yet, none of their trucks have any airtabs, and none of their trailers have any skirting, undertrailer tray system, or trailer tails. Anyone know how they are getting around this? Seems odd they are the only ones of the major carriers to not have moved with the Green movement.
I drove for Marten back 7 years ago and had a great time there, part of me thought....maybe they are grandfathered in, because they've been going to Cali forever....but that doesn't seem right, because then alot of other carriers should be grandfathered in too.
Anyone know whats up?
Marten Transport - going to Cali but no Smartway "Green" trailer skirts etc??

I thought they all had to have at least the trailer skirts . . .
-
Airtabs don't count.
Usually is the Skirts or the Undertray System.
It really depends on Model Year of the Trailer.

They have a schedule as long as a certain % are upgraded they have a replacement schedule to meet and well there is 0 enforcement of that rule that i,ve heard of

Don't know if it's true or not, but Marten driver told me they get some kind of an exemption because they ship trailers by rail.

Doesn't make any sense. Just because they buy majority of their fuel in California shouldn't make them exempt. Plus fuel purchases will be reflected on their IFTA.
^ That is my opionon.
On another note, who enforces this? No one, currently at the moment. -
wonderdog24 Thanks this.

It is not an exception but large fleets with hundreds or thousands of trailers can agree to a phased/stepped program by which they have a certain % of their trailers compliant within a certain time frame. So, yes they may have a trailer go into CA with no aero' aids and be fine. I think 2016 is the drop dead date for 100% compliance.
I say suck it CA, let the veggies rot in the field. -
Just seems odd I haven't seen a single Marten trailer with skirts. Maybe they are waiting until 2015 to install them all.
