E-logs are great in that they pretty much automatically switch between driving and on duty. You need to remember to switch to off duty/sleeper as appropriate.

The only real reason people want to use paper logs is so they can cheat with them.

Ooorrr... the real reason people want to use e-logs is because they're too lazy and want an electronic babysitter to do the work for them.

Another reason for favoring paper is cost, for a one truck, or a smaller multiple truck operation, e-logs absolutely will increase costs, we didn't have e-logs, but did have People-net, for less than 40 trucks, and the upfront costs, plus the maintenance needed, caused the company let them go.

The only way to get the 'benefits?' of e-logs is to have staff willing to be trained to use them. The 'blackmail factor' used to force carriers to adopt them isn't a good thing, either.IMO

Added on edit. BTW, you need to be able to do paper and have it with you in case the ELD(newer, less invasive version) ever fails, and they can and do fail.

I love my E-log instead of wasting 15min every morning filling out my log date, name, address, home terminal, beginning odometer, BOL#, times, inspection report, blah blah blah I go out there hit the key push the on duty button go back in the house while the truck warms up fix my coffee go back out get in hit driving and drive off takes me 10sec!! And I have someone else watching over me checking my logs as I go and gives me a count down to how long I have before my break or the end of my shift!! LOVE MY E-log

Love paper, hated the nanny box when I hauled freight.
Paper gives me a little wiggle room on things like the stupid 1/2hr break rule.

Paper. I dont have to stop 20-30m from destination and add a day to a trip. If I sit in 30mins of traffic, I can log that as a break(or if I don't sit). I NEVER sleep more than 6hrs, working or not, I'm not sitting 4hrs twiddling my thumbs. A slow broker doesn't rob me of driving time. Traffic/weather, doesn't rob me of driving time. Nothing robs me of my ability to work a normal day and provide for my family. We have some drivers on elogs and they make way less so save your "I'm making the same", if so, you were never making your potential. JMHO, yours may vary.

Well I have been driving 8 months. Been on paper and elogs. Both have advantages. I don't know how to fudge paper. Don't want to know. If I make a bit less but not risk my cdl then that's what im going to do. Money ain't the end all be all guys. If this makes me stupid in your eyes I don't care. I think you all are stupid for cheating on logs. If you all hadn't done it in the past we wouldn't have these stupid rules.

Cheating = protecting income against things you can't control. I.E. traffic, weather, broker lies, slow shipper/receiver

my family won't go with less nor will i have to work longer for same because of those. I have no problem saying I cheat, I accept the risks as I know me and how I function better than the govt or a black box. If tired, I stop, if not, I go.

And I always have legal looking logs, and only one set. If you run with bad logs, you deserve everything that happens to you when it takes less than 5 mins to keep it right.

Some need a time clock, some don't, to each his own. I avg +/-700m/day(will go 1000 on occasion), I'm home 2-3 times a week and every weekend because of how I drive. No accidents, only one ticket and a stack of inspections with no logbook issues.

*Beep* Is that your truck telling you to stop? Lol. ;-)
