You get used to the noise pretty quick. Doesn't affect my sleeping at all and in fact when on continuous run it's almost like a white noise generator and can help me fall asleep.

As to rates, I don't know. This years started off gang busters but the last couple months have been tough for me.

Actually, Reefer loads are hot right now - good miles to be had. I run a Reefer and STILL hate them for the noise after swearing I would never pull one. But I also have an APU and will run it for "white noise" to drown out the reefer. Plus, it doesn't hurt my ears as much when my bank account is fat...

Reefer noise (in the sleeper) is going to be related to 2 things. The particular unit you have (newer is quieter and TK is quieter then Carrier), and your truck. Some truck cabs tend to literally amplify the reefer noise and have little wall insulation, and/or the aluminum skin tends to act like a bass drum skin.

All that said, newer ones in newer, better spec'd trucks are hardly a noise issue except perhaps in the beginning until you get used to them. As a company driver, I actually got to a point I preferred continuos run loads as opposed to cycle-sentry mode. Also, keep the belts adjusted properly and the access doors and other accessories good and tight so you don't have any more noises to contend with then necessary.

When I say TK is quieter then Carrier, what I mean is Carrier seems to have more "low frequency sound waves" that can be very annoying up close. Kind of like a song with a lot of bass, with the equalizer bass turned up

I pull both have reefer and a flatbed. One slows down I pull other with flat I have a lot less deadhead miles and people are generally happy to see you unlike reefer where you could sit while they use you as temp cold storage plus have to pay them stinken lumpers sometimes to get unloaded and buy reefer fuel. Me I like pulling flat more then reefer. Expect to see a mpg drop and rates are not really any better. And you will spend more time telling some idiot to quit loading you heavy in the nose of trailer all the time. If your trailer is paid for I would keep it and look at buying a good used reefer to try and very rarely do I need all the extra room a 53 foot reefer has and am generally heaver gross weight pulling reefer then flat.

For me it wasn't the noise that woke me, it was when the unit shut down. Something in my subconscious tells me that something is wrong when the engine shuts itself off. I didn't get REM sleep for 3 months then just decided to always run continuous on everything. The extra $10 worth of fuel was well worth a solid 8 hours of sleep.

Going from flatbed to refer!!!! I think you will hate it trying to get into docks and tight places. You know we flatbedders can't back up right?

I try to run on continuous, so no interrupted sleep. If the unit starts and stops, well I'm up and down all night. You get used to it.

Haha True! But I'd rather be driving with a flatbed I can get out of my truck at the truck stop and make sure everything is right and sleep and drive away
