2012: A Y2K for the New Age

Quote:
Scholars rarely love popularizers, and nowhere is this enmity more evident than in the battle over 2012—a date which, depending on your view, will coincide with the end of the world, the transformation of global consciousness, the end of the Mayan calendar, the beginning of another cycle of the Mayan calendar … or nothing at all. "I don't pay any attention to this stuff because it's bunk," says Anne Pyburn, an anthropologist at Indiana University who studies the Maya. Among followers of New Age religions, though, and particularly among those who like to celebrate the equinox at the Mayan ruin Chichen-Itza on Mexico's Yucatán peninsula, the belief that the year 2012 will mark a global transformation is widespread. In bookstores, on shelves marked "magic" or "divination," numerous volumes promote this view—and many more are on their way, from publishers as big as HarperOne and as small as Bear & Company, a New Age publisher in Rochester, Vt. Around Thanksgiving, Sony Pictures plans to release "2012." The trailer for the movie shows the oceans washing over mountains that look like the Himalayas while the face of a monk registers terror. One of the most popular authors in the 2012 category is John Major Jenkins, a self-described "independent researcher" whose 1998 book "Maya Cosmogenesis 2012" helped usher in this craze. "Around the year we call 2012," he writes, "a large chapter in human history will be coming to an end. All the values and assumptions of the previous World Age will expire, and a new phase of human growth will commence."

I think that people get to caught up in the end of the world and forget that whether the end of the world comes today or not, they still have their lives they should be living up until their life ends, either because the world as we know it ends or they die.

Getting focused on a date the world will end just causes people to act strange, imho.

It is better to live each day like it's your last, and be thankful if you find that you have another day to live.

It's not good or healthy to worry about what you can't change or do a whole lot about, and imho it is very unlikely anyone who sets a date for the end of the world knows what they are talking about no matter when they lived.

I think that the end will come when people are least expecting it, and probably when people are thinking things are peaceful or something like that, further I believe the end of this world will be sudden.

...snipped...
.
Too many people are looking for the end.

I first heard this story in the early to mid 70's. It has bearing in 2 seperate cultures located over 1000 miles apart. IE It's not exclusive to the Mayans.

I love reading the research on this. Namely because it has shown the Mayans to be a much more advanced culture, than was previously thought possible for that era.

Side note, I never put much stock in the "end of the world" hocus pocus....until Obama took office. Now I'm wondering if they shouldn't revise that date to 2010.

I don't understand how Obama is still in office, based on all the things I have heard about him.
And especially with him putting the United States down in the ways that he has been, and releasing all kinds of things to the media that imho should not be released at least not when your in the middle of a war, to me that is just asking for problems.

I kind of think that he will be one of the leading causes of the end of America. (not end of the world just end of America, because of the things he is saying and doing)

I also think if it were any other president doing the same things people would be wanting him removed from office, but I suppose that's just my opinion of the matter.

Hopefully in four years we'll have better candidates to choose from and just elect someone else. That hopefully will be able to fix whatever damage is done by then.
America just needs to last that long.

has anybody ever taken into consideration that the mayans simply ran out of rock? i'm going to have a laugh at the world's population as 2012 draws closer. i can't wait to hear about the mass murders, mass suicides, and mass hysteria all because people are buying into this end of the world garbage.

I couldn't agree more.

There have been people in every generation that believe that the world is going to end in their lifetime. Apocalyptic Christians, Jews and Muslims are waiting for armageddon (many are even trying to bring it on as quickly as possible). Environmentalists push the global warming doomsday on the secular side of things.

IMO, this is rooted in the idea that subconsciously, people just have a hard time believing that the world is going to continue on and be just fine without them. How many 'end of the world' scenarios have you lived through? Let suppose that the Mayans did believe that the world was going to end in 2012. They should have spent their time worrying about other things, as their society was wiped out long ago. That should the main lesson of the Mayan calendar for all of us.

There's money to be made on FEAR, and the History channel, Hollywood, Imams, Televangelists and authors are all lining up at the trough to get in on the action. It's just so hard for people to give up their addiction to fear.

The significance of 2012: The sunrise on the winter solstice crosses the exact galactic center.

That's it. This stuff actually happens once every 20 or so thousand years.

I'll doubt that means anything either. That article reeked to me of people's need for attachment to cause, and once again, will pull anything out of the air and throw it out there. And plenty will believe because they want to.
New Age Y2K? Well named.

I have not a clue when the world will end. But, World War III is right around the corner...

AFTER World War III can other things come to be. Won't until then. Who knows how long World War III will last though? 1 year? 7 years?
