Jedi Religion in 2,000 Years

Jedi Religion in 2,000 Years

Quote:
By Chris Towles Illustration by Jason Seiler
Issue #202, November/December 2005

In the 2001 Australian national census, 70,509 people marked "Jedi" as their religion. In New Zealand, it was 53,715. As this budding religion makes its way in the world, what struggles does it face in 2000 years?

Many Jedi will recognize the old Jedi Testament consisting of New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi as the only real scripture. Others will insist that the New Jedi Testament, consisting of Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clone, and Revenge of the Sith, is just as valid. In an area called Qumran II (formerly known as Skywalker Ranch), a young goat herder will discover a video called the Star Wars Holiday Special about the holiday season with Chewbacca and his family. Featured in the film are Harvey Korman, Bea Arthur, Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones, and Jefferson Starship.

Arguments break out as to the authenticity of the work and its validity as Jedi scripture.

Some Jedi are not granted the rank of Master because they condone the practice of slavery. (They use Anakin and his mother as examples of how Lucas condoned slavery.) These split into a new group known as the Southern Jedi Convention.

A group known as the Yoda Seminar will meet to vote on what Yoda actually did or did not say.

A senator, whose name will be Palpatine, Pressler, or Patterson, will figure a way to take over the Southern Jedi Convention by gradually giving himself more control as he slowly puts people into positions of power who will vote him as emperor. He will begin his conquest at Caf du Monde on New Orleans IV, in the Crab Nebula. His wife will submit (to the dark side).

A group will split from the Southern Jedi Convention to form the Cooperative Jedi Fellowship.

Many will argue whether or not the King Lucas Version is the only true version of scripture.

There is nothing new about the religion found in Star Wars. It is nothing more than old fashioned Pantheism with a scientific spin.

The Jedi had no gods. If anything they were based on Buddhist monks but more inclusive.

Not to mention that it's, you know, all fiction.

Well, the article isn't really about the religion in Star Wars, it's a riff on Christianity (Baptists in particular).

It's funny, because your same claim about the Star Wars religion can be made about Christianity, it is nothing more than old fashioned Osiris or Mithras worship with a Jewish spin.

Didn't somebody make a link between Jesus and Horus, the Egyptian God, who also said "I am the way, the truth, and the life"?

There are many, many similarities between the Osiris, Isis and Horus myths and the life of Jesus. Osiris is killed and mutilated at the hands or evil, is dead for three days (from the 17th to the 19th of Athyr), is resurrected and becomes the judge of the dead. The images of Isis and Horus are very similar to that of Mary and Jesus.

Of course, there are also fundamental differences, too (many more differences than similarities). How much you want focus on the similarities or focus on the differences is up to you. IMHO, there is no doubt that the Hellenized peoples of the Middle East and Asia Minor had an easier time accepting the story of Jesus than those who were not Hellenized (like the Pharasees). Virgin births and resurrections were far more common in Greek and Egyptian myths than they were in Jewish theology. I'd guess that it has something to do with it.

I have no idea why I waste my time anymore. The whole point of my post is that the religion found in Star Wars is based on real religion that has been around for a long time, nothing more. Yet once again it has been turned into an argument far away from the original point and a way to denigrate the beliefs of others. If there is one thing lacking more than anything else in our society, it is respect for others and what they believe.

I don't care who you are, the Golden Rule is a good rule to live by. To those who call themselves Christians I would leave you with the words of Paul And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Eph. 4:32

There's also no shortage of religion riffing on tv and in the newspaper. That's also nothing new.

There's also nothing scientific about the Jedi or lightsabers or Star Wars. It's all fantasy. Just a lot more interesting than real life religion.
