McElroy Truck Lines - Cuba, Al.

    I went with McElroy straight outta school and worked there for 6 months. McElroy laid me off, bc they didn't have any freight in the western parts of Pa , which is where I live. I was accumalting alot of dead head miles to get home for the weekends, and their company policy was that you would be home every weekend. When I worked there, if you didn't get home for a 34 hr restart on the weekend, they paid you an extra $100. which only happened once or twice. As far as christian morals... they mention it alot and I do know they frown big time on vulgar language...etc. stuff like that. I still talk to a few of the their drivers and they are still happy. I would recommend McElroy to any driver that wants to run flat-bed, and lives in the South East! Only bad thing I will say about the company is that McElroy Truck Lines.... stands for MTL... which means... Must Tarp Load. Their company policy is all loads must be tarped ... No matter what! And if things are the same... they start ya out at 38 cents per mile.... and I would say I was averaging around 2200 miles a week... give or take ... some weeks better .. some alittle less. Also ... when I worked there .. the trainers had the double bunk condos .. and the company drivers got the 9400i series internationals... with the hi rise bunks... lots of room ... 70 inch .. i do believe .. not sure tho ... I have a picture of the truck I had with McElroy on myspace.. same name as here. Hope this information helps you.. and good luck

    I can appreciate your opinion of this trucking company. Can I ask did you work there and how long? And was it because of false promises? Such as not getting paid what they owe you, I'm a bit confused. I have read about McElroy trucking at other locations were great, but Cuba AL location is the one I'm most interested in hearing about.

    Today lies caught up with CT transportation, for weeks when I talked with them they told me one thing on the phone and I insisted for two weeks before we make a decision of a company I wanted in writing everything of what they offer as well as insurance, (they have nothing on website or brochure) In the first paragraph they contridicted any previous conversation. So I'm really curious about McElroy at Cuba, AL location.

    How many years have you diven for any trucking company? Have you heard of any good southeast regional delivery area only companies? Especially for a newbie?

    Any further credible info would be appreciated.:biggrin_25514:

    Do you think that maybe why they are a few cents higher in pay is because of the MTP? Was this difficult to do? I'm sure time consuming.
    Also I've heard you do have to go to NY, did you have to and how horrific was it?

    After training are the trucks they give the newbies stand up sleeper?
    My husband is 6'5" , lucky him huh?

    Hello XL, I hate you had such a rocky orientation. I hope you got all the issues on DAC straightened out.

    If you don't mind can I ask a question? What exactly didn't match up with orientation vs. recruiter. I've heard it happens alot. But I would like details what McElroys trucklines twist are. I'm interested about the Cuba AL location. This is who we are talking with.

    First of all, the trucks given to drivers are 9200i's, mid-roof, with C-13 Cats and 10-sp trannys. Limited to 64 mph. The majority of the trailers are 48' spread-axle (10'2" center-center) aluminum/steel, air-ride. There are some 45' s-a (8'1" c-c) non air rides left, but they are slowly going away. As far as tarping goes, some loads are easy, some are not. Depends on the flatness/even loading of the product. Once you develop your own little system of tarping, a good load of sheetrock or lumber should be less than 30 minutes. Shingles are the one load carried by McElroy that is tarped MAYBE 10% of the time, only for certain customers, OR if you have rolled felt mixed in with the load. Again, 30 minutes or less.
    When you start with McElroy, dont expect a LOT of miles, 2000 will be about as much as most get. They like to "see what they can expect" from newbies. Newbies dont get a full week of loads pre-planned like the more experienced drivers do. That allows a little cushion for slower tarpers, getting lost, other newbie mistakes and stuff. Also, dont expect ANY steel loads. You gotta have 6 months with them, and then attend securement classes. I should go thru this after the turn of the year. I have hauled 1 load of mixed steel building components, but its the coils that are limited to experienced drivers.
    Overall, once you prove yourself, expect to get more miles. Your reliability and safety, once proven to your dispatcher, is your ticket to miles.
    As far as NY, since I am based out of the Cuba,Al terminal, it would be VERY rare for me to got NY, or ANYWHERE in the NE. The drivers from Pleasant Hill, NC get most of that. I did go to Joliet, IL, just to the SW of Chicago, this last week. Furthest North to date for me.

    I have worked at mcelroy for some time and any pay problems have been cleared quickly, however you are not paid practical miles which you may be referring to.

    What do you mean- what the 2000 starting out? or just your 11 hour drive time?

    avg miles will be 2200-2500, all driving times are enforced with use of quallcomm. miles in winter are about half because housing slows.

    In orientation we were told "the company is Christian based but the work still has to be done" enough said. We were told the orientation was paid, however on the 1st day there we were given paperwork to sign stating if we don't stay 6 mos, we would be charged for hotel room, DOT and Drug tests, hardhat and safety glasses etc. (we were told in class that we would get a copy of the DOT card, but after calling them back they said you will have to pay an additional 30.00 if you want a copy, they get a discount but you must pay a total of 60.00 not included in total) total charge was 160.00 out of the 300.00 they "pay". (we were paid .20 per mile for travel) We were paid so that part is true, just less than we were told. While there they had a few people just finishing up the training. On the 7th week, they have you do a Driving Test and you get only 1 shot, if you don't make it, you are let go. Your record will show they let you get into the 7th week, and couldn't pass a driving test. We all wondered how this could happen that a driver was with a trainer for 4 weeks and they didn't know a problem existed. We asked the orientation trainer, and were told that does not happen often but it can. Talked to some other employees and found out it happens a lot. In orientation you will notice lots of video cameras, and were told "we have eyes from El Paso to Bangor we always know what is going on. You make your own decision.

    Got new news on hauling steel outa Columbia,MS from SeverCorr. Seems they are now in FULL production and McElroy is sending any1 that has completed coil training class, regardless of experience. I was there last week picking up a 43000 lb'er and ran into a 6th week rookie hauling his 4th coil! Not that this is a bad thing, he could be an excellent driver, it's just that coils are so dangerous I would expect the more experienced drivers to haul them. The one thing that REALLY P'oD me is the lease drivers seem to be the ones who are the "in-house" drivers getting the dedicated run from the mill to a drop-off point 11 miles away. 22 mile round trip, NO TARP, paid salary, NOT miles. You sit there in line waiting your turn to be loaded, here comes 2,3, or more dedicated drivers rolling right past you to get loaded AHEAD of you. :biggrin_25516: Makes you VERY,VERY:biggrin_25510:
