Find something you like to do and hope it pays your bills. Who cares if its Swift, England or Prime. If you like local work thats great, if you like the freedom of over the road - GREAT... Cr England and Swift are mega carriers with most of the freight to offer, if they sucked that bad, they wouldnt be in business. Remember: they offer newbies to drive for them, with that said, what is the percentage of newbies that know exactly what its like to be on the road 2-4 weeks at a time? Its obviously not for everyone, in fact, its almost like camping every night in a different city. Be thankful for those who love to drive OTR and bring your goods to your hometime, and yes it pays the bills! I was offered a local job 15.25 an hour, I make more staying OTR and I enjoy being out on the road. Less stress, less traffic and Im doing what I enjoy.

    Just my 2 and 1/2 cents worth.:biggrin_25519:

I am amazed...wow...people make more than .26 cents a mile????and get home every night????..and don't have to freeze their ###es off in 500,000 mile trucks and aren't sent threatening letters about log violations???? What the heck??? where did I go wrong??? maybe it's ME and not the company that I work for?
    Let me see-11 hours drive time(but maybe another 1 0r 2 hours working in other areas-get going,gas,pre trip,post trip, log b.s. etc etc).....at an average of 600 miles(well...for the purpose of this discussion, I'll be OPTIMISTIC) that's what,uhh,$150(600 X .26) divided by(be nice here-12.5 hours) equals $12.00 an hour...
$12.00?(or do I DIVIDE THAT BY 24 HOURS SINCE THAT IS HOW LONG I AM STUCK IN THIS TRUCK?)and that's WHEN I DO get loads.(lots of fun to sit around waiting for that Load plan-WHEN/IF I get going does not seem to matter much to these people)and I get to spend 2,3 weeks of every month away from my wife and son,and I get to sleep in a cold truck (cannot wait for no A/C in summer)I get to worry about some newbie d.o.t punk looking to impress his bossman(s),or some new jackoff cop trying to impress HIS bosses, and all that other b.s. that comes with THIS job-KNOWING that this company won't back me up if I MAKE A MISTAKE?
AND THEN after all of that bull$hitt (and you know there's more than what I just said)I get to watch over my shoulder for every company violation that I need to worry about, while the planner is telling to to move a little faster and then they will get me a "better trip" NEXT time:)biggrin_25514:).
I must have missed something, but why do I need to be working under these conditions for a company that does not give a ##### about me ,and threatens me at every chance?
    I missed something-MOSTLY when I signed up for this.I don't know what I was thinking of,must have been drunk(don't drink,though).

Hey Mattrucker, Welcome to the trucking industry. You've just described the job to a "T" for just about any company. It's been this way for decades. There's only a small fistful of companies that have a little bit better story than yours. However, if you let your attitude keep festering along the lines it's going now, you may want to find some other career, because this one isn't going to get much better for you. As I said, Welcome to the trucking industry! Good luck and be safe!

    YeaH!
I was just gonna say Matt caught on pretty quick with 0-1year experience.
    It takes longer for most.

It's been said that the first year is the worst.
But now-a-daze I'm not sure that holds true.
The future doesn't look all that bright either.

The Big truck truckin' industry has improved so much,
    it's no fun anymore. :biggrin_25513:
    Progress. :biggrin_25521:

I worked for JB Hunt back in 2007 ad it was just fine. Wasn't the best by a long shot but I got miles and made a few bucks every week. This time around I couldn't find any local work so I'd apply to every company that souded good to me. I never applied to JB Hunt this time around but everytime that i'd apply to one company, JB would call me/email me. They were the only ones to extent a job offer to me so I had to take it. Was SE regional but they wanted me to go to the Ohio N.Carolina loop. Promising 2500+ miles a week and home 3 outta 4 weekends. Everything was as said for a couple of months. Then they switched fleet managers around throughout the company and then my miles dropped to 900 to the occassional 2000. Then I was still on closed loop but it didn't seem like it I was going everywhere, illinois, texas, georgia, sc, florida, oklahoma, and the places i was supposed to stay in, Ohio and NC was once or twice every 2 weeks. Then my home time was reduced to every other weekend for 36 hours if I was lucky. I got a ticket in my own personal vehicle in a rental car for accidentally spinning of tires taking off from a stop light. Cop had a stick up his butt and wrote it up as wreckless driving even though there was nobody endangered and all it was was a 1-2 second squal. Told him it was a rental that I wasn't used to that I picked up the night before due to my car being in the shop getting body work from a wreck 3 weeks prior. He wasn't having it and then yea. Im having Drivers Legal Plan work on the ticket and should get it dropped from wreckless driving. JB Hunt found out about the ticket and even though I haven't been found guilty or the ticket hasn't posted as wreckless driving *innocent until proven guilty* JB Hunt sends me home and calls me the next day saying WERE SORRY BUT WE CANT HAVE YOU DRIVING IN OUR TRUCKS WITH A WRECKLESS DRIVING ON YOUR RECORD. IF THE TICKET GETS DROPPED THEN YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR REHIRE. Like id reapply to a company that fires you before your found guilty at Christmas time when you need to have money the most. Thanks alot JB Hunt ill be seeing you in the soup kitchen window as your trucks pass by haha. I moved to Amarillo Texas and have a couple of interviews for jobs, just hope they dont call jb or ill be screwed out of a good job.
