I too had a similar experience with AirRide...bad news-top to bottom. They bully drivers and treat them worse than alot of shippers. I quit, and about three weeks later, my replacement quit- no word on the latest victim of their incompetance and arrogant "stupidvisors"...hang in there, and you gave me an idea...that "other" company may be looking for a good driver that already knows the DHL system.:smt001

    UPDATE........

my former "stupidvisor" has been officially removed from his duties.........

he now is an "ordinary driver" for the company (Air-Ride), doing a "boston" run...........

i am "in negotiations" with the "other" trucking company that has several DHL runs, and they need 2 full time yardmen. one is already taken, i want the second. the pay will be better than what i'm getting now at Ryder as a yardman, so the weekly pay checks will be "roughly" about $200. more per week, plus i know the layout of the DHL system as well.

i still make 2 very quick runs on sunday nights for that "other trucking company, at a nice "under the table pay"...........

but, if i can get that yardman's job, that'll have to end.........and that's ok, as the full time yardman's job is 6 nights per week, but the hours will still be "normal" of sorts, with a get home time of around 6 am. and i'll tell you people, yardman's work isn't all that difficult either. i've been doing it this past week (this was my first week at Ryder) and i have periods of time when i can actually nap, and get paid for it. one night, i wass on duty for 2.5 hours, before they ever needed me, so that was easy money to take, and not too stressfull like being on the road for several hours and NOT being paid for waiting..............!!!

i'll update next week with more info if i can get that seccond yardman's job, the owner of that "other trucking company" had better plans/money for me, but i told him i'm very tired of the road, and he still wants me as his employee, as he's recieved several "reports" about my dependability/experience/no B.S. attitude in dealing with people...........

my age is actually "dictating" my decision to get into a yardman's job, as i ain't getting any younger, and the stress of the road has killed off several drivers my age too soon in their lives. i want to be able to retire and live a while longer than the average age of 60-65 when some of the obituaries are written up about some of those drivers............. we won't all be able to see the high 70's, let alone the age of 80+...............

Some yard jocks that have to hook up doubles have it a little rough, though.

yeah true, but in either job, at Ryder or the DHL account, no such monsters........

i worked for a union place some years ago, and drivers still were required to do that themselves...........

Where I work, at their terminal in Richmond, the yard horse there has a pintle hitch on it that's attached to a hydraulic cylinder, that raises and lowers by means of a lever in the cab. Just lower the hitch, back up to the dolly, raise it, and away you go to the tail trailer. Very nice...

Doesn't work for Great Dane dollies though. The eyes on those sit too low.

I just saw last night that DHL has some tractors and trailers themselves now. Hmmm... I guess DHL wants to get into the big truck game now instead of contracting out all of their shuttle work. I saw 2 combination units on the NJ Turnpike going south. I guess leaving Newark airport and heading down to South Jersey.

actually you need to check the sides of the tractors and the nose of the trailers for signs saying whom the equipment belongs to. DHL has purchased a small trucking company but to this day, they operate that as a seperate entity. DHL doesn't own any equipment, even the small delivery vans and straight trucks belong to "private contractors" that have the rights to "fly" DHL colors under contract agreements.

those units you saw are still "private contractors", under contract.......

Hello Fellow Air-Ride Alumni, I worked part time for them on Sundays out of Ma. to Ri. for three years, never called in sick or missed a scheduled start. Used to give them a month notice for a day off and even helped out their customer (Airborne) when they were broken into. Great equipment, no one bothered me, decent $ and after three years, went in one day at my regular start time and found the tractor gone. Called dispatch who told me not to worry about the missing tractor just go home and call in on Monday to the driver manager. So I wasted 2 hours on a Sunday and they could not even tell me i was canned. Called Monday and was told the driver manager was busy but the same dispatcher said she was sorry but the route was re-assigned. I asked for the voice mail of the driver manager and told her both her and Air-Ride suck and thanks for wasting my time when all they had to do was call me at home or my cell and say see you later. Pretty much seems that if they need you fine but when they don't, see you around. And for the other N East guy if you went to work for the same Frank that was there when I was, he is a great guy. Otto.

Hey Pro 1 got the message just have to do a few more posts before I can reply in private. I saw the Ned-Pvd run in the paper this weekend, what happened to C. . That used to be his steady reun for along time. I see they got rid of the Volvo's and went with the Macks along with a new color. You new yard job that up in Smithfield. The place I temp for had me at C. . . As s shuttle driver between Smithfield and Woonsocket and between the radio calls from the dispatch people and the moves assigned by the guards it was usually a busy day. Good luck with your choice and thanks for getting back on the first post. otto
