| I started my truck driving career at Stevens Transport in February of 2005. Fortunately, I chose to go to the USTDS Driving school in Denver instead of the Stevens school, so I can't verify any of the claims of previous posters regarding their school. However, I can verify the rest. The company definitely has a lot of problems in how it treats drivers, lack of miles, etc. The one piece of advice I give all new Stevens drivers that I meet is this... AVOID THE STEVENS/ALLIANCE LEASING PROGRAM, NO MATTER WHAT THEY TELL YOU!! Most of the problems I had there were related to being in that lease truck than anything else. I constantly had to fight for miles, and reimbursements when I had to sit and wait for loads. I took home, after taxes, just under $4,500.00 in FOUR MONTHS. That's just plain ridiculous. To their credit, though, when I returned the lease truck, and they tried to charge me an additional $500 for breaking the lease, I went to the VP in charge of the leasing division and reasoned with him. He told me not to worry about any of those charges, and in fact reimbursed me for a truck payment before I got back into a company truck. Folks, be careful who you work for, and be even more careful of what contracts and agreements you sign while you're there. Leasing programs vary greatly from company to company in how much they pay, miles, etc. The one lesson I learned that I try and pass on to others is to always compare to other companies. If I had done that, I would have never signed that lease. Oh well... lesson learned, and I'm smarter now. (I hope)

I plan to start with Stevens in February. Why? The school is in Houston, I can work it off, Domino's is easy but just not much $$$, and my car is old, and alot of truck companies have pages of complaints here. I don't need to make alot of money, I just need to get some experience. Besides, some drivers speak well of Stevens, they just say you gotta drive for 4-6 weeks at a time, and dont refuse any runs. I gotta start somewhere. |

I still advise you avoid them completely, but if you do sign on, please promise me you won't be suckered in to the lease program. Next time I'm home guys, I'll scan in my statements from the lease program proving how much of a rip-off it is.

OK, I promise not to go on the lease. And thanks for postings, rj .... Maybe I'm missing something. If Texas workforce will pay for it, maybe I can have them pay for it from the start of school, and then I can work for a better trucking company. I guess I must do a google search now, thanks ... I just want to do school, go work somewhere for experience, then move to Arizona and work for KLLM or a company that has a terminal in Phoenix so I can drive out of Phoenix. But then again, San Antonio, TX would be OK, too. Or Las Vegas. Just alot closer to Arizona. so, thanks RJ |

![]() Seriously, though, you get on with them, go through the school, start at the Dallas terminal, get a transfer to run out of the Phoenix terminal, then when you get moved you find a better company. Like Knight or something. I dunno. Just a thought.

I have two lists of truck companies: List A = first job, get experience, drive alot, practice playing the guitar if they make me wait too long, spend a year ... List B = go there (Knight, KLLM, etc) and stay. thats the plan. Bill |

Wrong. It IS legal but students have to transfer their license back to their home state within 90 days. Most states don’t allow no-residents to hold commercial licenses in their state, but I know Texas, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas do. |
