missed this thread for a while, so i've gotta catch up.

Yes, the L/O can take the swift discount. The rate for the shop is cheaper than the rate you'd get going to a KW (or International, Freightliner) shop. But lets just say for arguments sake, they are 25% cheaper. Okay...fine. But if you've got to take your truck into a swift shop more than once for the same problem, because some "dee dee dee" in denver didn't do the job you just paid for, now another techie in another terminal shop has to REDO the same job, how much are you really saving??

I'd honestly rather pay a dealer to work on my truck, know it is done right, and if not, they do it again....FOR FREE. or if they break something, they replace it.....FOR FREE. Swift shops are a joke, cause 3x out of 4, you just get a tech who is using your truck as a learning tool anyway.

i'm guessing you're just a company driver. Either way, if it takes me getting a little dirty to save myself a day and a half in the shop....which means more $$ in my pocket compared to sitting for all that time waiting for someone to do THEIR job....yeah....you're darn right i'll crawl under my truck, over my truck, around my truck, whatever.....u get the point. You keep yourself ##### and span, like you just came out of a nail salon, and be one of the 30 drivers sitting in the lounge crying about miles, all the while, i'll be 2 states away making some cash.

i like the part about the tech using the truck as a learning tool---and that is different in most swift drivers in what way?
nobody is born knowing everything--at least i sure wasnt --i learn new stuff each day--so i am not going to knock somebody for learning--thats why you pay a reduced rate at the swift shops---as for dealer shops--i have seen just as many learners there as at a private shop
the ones you have to watch out for are the people who know everything--just ask them --they will even tell you they know it all

yeah, that was how long ago? and for the record i did say i was going to get BELTS for the truck.....and it was W9 or whoever who just knew exactly what i had under the hood for an engine. and they're the ones who said "oh you're dumb, you only have one belt". yeah....go figure. And the whole battery 'repair' was nothing but a scam anyway. When i took the truck in, it went in and i said "starter". They come back and say, "oh well it was a battery". a week later, the same problem? and a week or two after that, i'm back at the same dealer and get a STARTER ?? Almost seems i know my truck better than anybody whos worked on it to date.....

you're right....nobody was born knowing everything. But i would expect any freight company to hire techs that have seen SOME sort of training. Not hire the Domino's delivery driver, just because he knows where the terminal is without using a map.

but how do you know that swifts techs no nothing?--that would take knowing more than them in order to know that they know nothing
and wouldnt that be just another form of swift bashing?

well lets see....before i take a wrench to a bolt/nut, i look to see if its rusty or has any corrosion. if it does, i spray it with a bit of WD-40...and i'll come back to it in 15 min. And the tech that drilled a hole into my exhaust stack obviously didnt have a clue, because he drilled and put in a tiny rivet into.......NOTHING. After the "fix", i had to cough up $180 for two heat shield brackets (cause he snapped off a bolt in each one) and the "fix" on the exhaust extention did no good, cause 200 mi down the road, i stopped for fuel, and noticed it had rotated 100 deg.

then when i get to Lancaster, the tech there said "gee you'll need a bracket for that exhaust, too". I said, "no...why dont you see if you have any strips of scrap metal you can fit between the bracket and the exhaust, so when you go to tighten it back down, there is less of a gap?" he did use two much bigger machine screws, and as of yet, has not vibrated loose yet.

again...proves my point of "guinea pig" shop work....

and i said a few techs never went to training. meaning others have. maybe they went to a tech college and got a degree in diesel engine mechanics or something, i dunno. I know there aren't nearly as many ASE mechanics in swift shops as there should. But then again, why would they want to work there, when they could work at a dealership making 2x as much?

does swift not pay well in the shop??
i have no idea-myself i would rather work for a private fleet than bust my butt in a dealership --yes my wage in shop was lower than dealer guys--but only 2 or 3 dollars--but its way more laid back and way more varied---but to each his own--everybody has different wants and needs

I've actually never been a company driver, nor would I ever be.

I am very happy that you have an intimate relationship with your truck.

I'll settle for a shower every two or three days. If our truck breaks down and has to go into the shop, we go to a hotel. That's why I'm not a company driver.
