WH Transportation Co., Inc., - Wassau, Wi.

First of all, let me say that I understand and realize that there is a certain amount of BS when dealing with any recruiter.

Well, I guess the one that I dealt with has the most.

I called the Ohio recruiting office and asked quite a few questions. I was satisfied with what he had to say, so I accepted the opportunity to go to Wausau for their orientation.

I was suppose to be picked up by one of their drivers on Monday morning...didn't happen.

Tuesday afternoon I got my ride and about two hours into the trip, I was really begining to question myself as to, did I make the right decision to go with this organization.

About 100 miles into Ohio, the driver ran out of hours.

Sixteen...Sixteen hours later the driver picked me up at the hotel and we continued onto Wausau. We arrived at the hotel in Wausau at 11:30 pm.

On Thursday morning, I began the second day, (my first) of orientation. By that afternoon it was becoming quite evident that there were problems.

The recriuter did infact misrepresent several facts.

This is what I had discovered, to list a few:

Trucks were not goverened # 70 mph, they are set at 65 cruise, 68 pedal.

Trucks are older the 2004

The trucks did not appear to be equipped with the generator packs.

No Pre Pass

No toll cards for Ohio or Indiana.

They do infact use brokers more often then I was led to beleive.

They do infact haul to grocery warehouses.

The following, to list a few, is other information that I had discovered:

The service department appeared to be very disorganized. More so than any that I have visited. The service department was also very out dated.

If you violate your 11 or 14 hour rule, you receive a 100.00 fine from the company.

If your toll receipts do not match to your log, you eat the tolls and receive a nasty gram from the company...something about fraud and stealing from the company.

New York City is forced dispatched.

When you get home and if you are under a load, the trailer can not be dropped/seperated from the tractor.

Do not dare exceed 5% on your overspeed, this affects your bonus.

You must purchase your own load locks.

All divers are required to attend quartley saftey meetings on Friday afternoons.

Now the rest of the story...

Although I did not agree with a few of these policies, I accepted them. It's their sand box.

On Friday morning I recieved my truck assisgment. It turned out the truck was still in the service department.

When I walked down to see the truck, I almost ....

The bumper was off the truck. Both bat wings were damaged beyond repair. The drivers seat was busted up. The drivers side windshield was busted. The interior was pigged out. Oh, and the mechanic mentioned that it was 20,000 miles past it's PM.

I went back to the gal who assigned the truck and asked her when the truck would be done. She said a couple hours. I asked her if she was shure and she asked why. I went over the damage with her and she had no idea. She also had no idea if there were any other trucks available.

An hour went by, still nothing on the truck assignment. Then I was told that I would probably have to get a ride with another driver, back to Ohio
to get a truck there. My ride might not be available until Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Well, after basically wasting a week of my time, no orientation pay, no lay over pay, no sign on bonus, no compensation or apology, I decided it was time to head home.

Fifteen hours later I was home, thamkful for rental cars and wondering how these companies get away with treating drivers like this. These companies invest thousands of dollars a year trying to attract the best drivers they can and look at what they do. It really makes you wonder.

In all fairness, there were a few good things WH had to offer, but no diffrent from any other company that has 418 trucks in their fleet. They claim to be in the top 10% in the country, when it comes to driver compensation. They also stated that they could probably do better, but they had number 1 to look after...and number 1 wasn't the driver. That was made very clear.

Re: WH Transportation...Be Aware, Be Very Aware

I applaud you bringing all of these points to the forum. The details are important.

I am sorry that this is the way that this company chose to try and fill a seat with a driver. What they think they gain, when they do it, is something I will never understand.

I advise you to pull your DAC report as soon as possible, and to fight any negative issues they offer in it, because the chances are very high that they might charge you with "quitting during orientation", which is a charge you should fight tooth and nail, on the basis (hopefully), that you did not receive any compensation from them, or signed a reciept for them, that recognized that you had services paid on your behalf by the company.

If you make this challenge forcefully with USIS, they legally have to remove the reference from your file.

You are not an employee of a company, until you have been extended an offer of employment, AND have received ANY compensation from that company. They have no legal right to offer employment references on that same legal point, if both of those points have not been met.

I just wanted to add that WH is having some major issues right now. They fired their best dispatcher a few weeks ago and because of that and all the other stuff going on they had 80 drivers leave within a week's period! Be very careful of looking at them right now. My husband has a friend who is still with them (only because he has too many points on his license to find another job) and things are worse then ever there now.

As Bad as it gets!

I just quit them last week and its about as bad as a carrier can get! The initial post has totally stated the truth about company policy and that the maintenance section is in total disarray..
I could only stand 9 months of the abuses that dispatch boldly dish out to its drivers, whom have no recourse or actions that could be taken in defense..
WH's problems begin at the top with its president who values his dispatch more than the actual people who are out there on the highways making the money and dealing with the real hardships...
This is a warning to any of you that are considering employment with WH... You will be at the mercy of a vindictive dispatch that has free reign and lets you know it! Force Dispatch.. Longs intervals between loads (No Layover till after 24hrs of sitting). NewYork City.. Incompetant Maintenance.. No reimbursement for tolls that don't match up with logbook.. Slow Trucks (68mph).. Dealing with Brokers (60-70%). And the worst, A hostile dispatch, then WH is for you..
I was a trainer for WH with a high retention rate of trainees with a perfect delivery record, 10 years on the road with no accidents or tickets.
FAIR WARNING GIVEN..!

Forbidden 3 WH Transportation Wausau WI

I hope I am not too late too warn you.
My name is Lee Cupp I drove for WH till yesterday when I quit. I was there for 1 month. Below is a summary of my time there

OrientationPay $0.00
My Start Pay $0.37
My first week I got 4200 miles in. And yes I do have proof if need be
Second week about 2100
third week about 1900
last week around 950

8/29/07
I dropped my load in Plymouth NC was dispatched to pick up a load in Chesapeake VA I run back roads when time will allow or it is needed.
RT 17 N pickle park on the south bound side I sat there for 7.5 hours waiting to get DIRECTIONS into the shipper. I would call shipper and there would be no answer. I would call broker and he would insist on me calling my dispatcher Al. I QC'd in and said i need directions several times and all I got back from Al was "WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO DO" At this point I am furious and wanting to tell him exactly what I wanted him to do but I maintained my professional attitude (Remember you get more bears with honey then salt). So instead of sitting in a pickle park all night I proceed north to a wal mart just across the line. It was there that I finally got my directions. Too bad the place was closed. So I get to shipper next morning and I ask her what the reason they gave why I was late. They tried to pin it on me saying I was running behind. I asked her to escort me to the truck to where I could then show her exactly what transpired the day before.

Now I am loaded I called receiver and I ask for directions into the facilities. I get this "Please call YOUR dispatch" Well by this time I am ready to leave my truck sit where it is at. Once again here we go with the directions deal. So I mosey up to the only cat scale close to Chesapeake VA on 64 still no directions. I waited for about 1 hour then sent in a QC stating I was going to the petro up on 95 to get a bite to eat and a shower, and that I would be out in about 3 hours to see what they had worked out. 3 hours rolls by I'm feeling pretty good and ready to roll NOT no message no nothing on my QC. (Too save all the writing on myself you can imagine how I am feeling) I finally made my load

Now there was various little quirks that was pissing me off more and more as time went by between then and yesterday.

Yesterday
The nite before I overheard drivers how they were getting screwed out of detent time. So I call my wife up and ask her to check last weeks pay stub and low and behold there was 1 hours detention time not on there. So I give the benefit of the doubt and go check with payroll. They came out and said "Yes we see where you put in for it but here is the load number you need to talk to your dispatcher" (by this time I am ready to hang Al. The last thing I want to do is talk to him about MY MISSING MONEY) So I go and talk to Al here is what he said "An hour ? it's not that much right ?" Well i went off. I bluntly told him loud enough for all the people in theyre cubicles to hear me this "You have 1/2 an hour to get me $20.00 in the form of cash, com check, food stamps, welfare check or any other currency as long as it equaled out to $20.00" He tells me "Let talk to Traci" I said "Fine I will go smoke a cig and calm down" I go out and smoke a cig hang out a few minutes trying to keep composure and then I go back inside. Al tells me since it is a first come facility I don't get detention time. I asked if it was a FCFS facility then why was there a appt time. he just looked at me. So I walked out and cleaned my mobile house out. me and another fella I went through school with rented a car and got the hell outta dodge.

In short people just please if there is one thing in your life that you listen too, one piece of advice that you will take PLEASE DO NOT GOTO WORK FOR WH TRANSPORTATION IN WAUSAU WI

I like the way people always say "you need to talk to your dispatcher." What are dispatchers really good for besides assigning your next load? Not much of anything that I know of.

Just like always, if you want something done right you have to do it yourself.

Why wouldn't the receiver give you directions to the facility?

There are many ways to get directions. Mapquest, calling the local police/fire dispatcher. Better than sitting all day waiting for a dispatcher to get them.
