I have enjoyed the information you all have given. My son went to Swift last week for training and then will be dispatched with a trainer. I only hope and pray he gets a good one.
Back in 1980 when I went to school I had never been in a truck and had no idea of what to expect. I had to get my license by myself because I lived in S.C. and the school I went to was in Green Cove Springs in Fl. South Carolina wouldn't except the training or certification of the drivers test of another state.
So I went to Rider rental in South Carolina where they had big trucks. The safty man gave me the driver's test was so kind,he told me where to go to get the commercial drivers license and gave me the papers that showed my test in driving and in backing up (he taught a lot that I should have been taught in school) and some other stuff to. Like air brakes and all that stuff. I got my license in S.C. and then I went to Atlanta, Ga. to Altruck and got a job.
I didn't think I would ever get out on the road by myself but my friend from school had a brother who wrote a letter stating he had driven over a year by himself. Back then there was no CDL just a class commercial. We drove team for three months and when we got a load to New Jersey I got my own truck and away I went. I couldn't even back up very good. But I learned. The information you all gave is good and will help any newbie. I wish this had been available when I started out.
God bless and keep you all with the shiny side up.

heres my 2 cents, i just started working for, d.s.w, (digby southwest, aka doing swifts work). there wasn't much in the phoenix area in trucking jobs so i went thru dsw, when i was hired i was told running the west 11 would be a good run here, 25-2800 miles a week, home 10-14 days, ! in 6 weeks my best week was 3900 miles and thats because i was told there was no frieght in my area(another lazy lie) and dispatched to new york, i ran the east ohio, tennesee,ky and into texas for a week, other than that my best week has been 1700 miles, c'mon man, even working for a company that deals with swift is crap! the only way i can see anyone making a buck here is training the people that going thru their yards, most of them don't have any business driving a car much less an 80,000 lb rig... so i say#### swift and anyone who says they treat you great your a liar, i am not a super trucker but i can get out and run, thats what were here to do right, well swift and associated companies give you a truck to take an unpaid vacation away from home in,

My husband works for swift and he has a great DM who treats him very well. He enjoys his job and is very happy. Now, that being said, I know there are alot of people who have had a bad time with them, and every right to feel the way they do, but please don't call me a liar. Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean everyone does.

AGREED! Everyone's situation is different.

A certain company might work for some and some it wont.

We all have preferences of where we like to run. As a company driver you have little choice of where exactly you want to go. My comfort zone is anywhere east of rockies. April to November I open it up to anywhere. Was out to Otay MEsa LAst time out, and was an interesting area like laredo. LA was a 10 miles in 3 hours mess going north on I-405. Had about 6000 miles in 2 weeks.

Office people are not allowed to own fleets anymore. Conflict of interest. They do however lease to Swift as a fleet owner. I believe its one of the Digby brothers who owns that fleet.

Yeah I drive a Swift truck
And that means one thing
It means she's slow
It's a typical company truck
It's just all show and no go

I'm gettin' passed by Yella
And even Overnite
I'm gettin' passed by ever' body in sight
46 days on the road
And I'm not gettin' home tonight

No, my hometown's nowhere in sight
And if you think I'm pissed off
You're right
46 days on the road
And I'm not gettin' home tonight

Love pissing off those trucking company insiders.
