I have been driving only for the experience, and its almost time to move on. Its post like the above that confirm my belief that over the road pay does not increase so much with experience. Because nowadays it doesnt have too. But as long as there is a fat, greasy, dumb super trucker, it will remain like this, and there are plenty of them.
I recommend CRETE (national fleet), your not tied down, you are available to run 48 states 3 weeks or more at a time!!! Freight is slowing down (thanks to the economy) but I still net 900-1100 a week with Crete! Not gross, but NET. And I only make .42 cpm (top is .47 cpm). I have been told there pay scale has changed, but I dont know the details. Just a FYI and good luck to ya!

Seems to me that the non-driving time for those 7 loads would add up considerably, and wind up hurting you more than the 2 long loads would.

Probably so if you are just a system driver and you don't have a rep as a go to driver. Not all drivers are treated equally. Like with any job those who make themselves valuable to the company can do much better then a driver who just sits around waiting for their Qualcom to beep.

They have a container fleet that does drop and hook between LA and phoenix. they have drivers out of Tulare that run load from LA to sac and most is drop and hook. They have driver in the Northwest that run from BC to Portland. All 3 of these fleets make around $900 a week average and run short to medium haul loads. One of their driver here in the Northwest told me they pay him $225 a day to run IKEA loads and paper and water out of Canada. Makes around $1100 a week and gets a full day and a half off . His longest run in the last year was from Hope BC to Portland OR which is around 400 miles.

Knight is setup for drivers who have a need to be home and have many veteran drivers who no longer want to be on the road for a month at a time. In short they have lives outside of trucking.

continuing

all i was saying was that it was exactly what they said it would be, a job, and a steady one. there is no company in today's market situation to provide 3000+ miles a week on over the road conditions consistently, as there is no way without preplanning a week in advance to maintain such an average. especially when you consider that there are breakdowns, maintenence issues, driver home time concerns, hours of service, and hold ups at shippers and receivers as variables in everyday activities. i am simply looking at the fact that i am making twice what i would be making at a local job from 9-5, fourty hours a week, maybe with overtime, and am glad that so far i haven't been lied to. my intent isn't to prop up knight, nor is it to degrade them, rather it is to give my opinion on the matter. and to give an honest assesment of what has happened so far, so that those considering knight can make an informed decision. i don't regret it yet, but as with all driving jobs these days, wait a while, i might change my mind.

Give Crete a call. If I lived on the east coast, I wouldnt drive for Knight. I spent almost 4 years with Knight on the west coast and was very happy (thanks to hometime mostly) but I would talk to drivers from the east coast (Knight drivers) and I would here horrible things. Good Luck

I'm not going to cut and paste my last month's data, but I earned over $3100 gross and didn't have one 4am or 11pm pick up or drop. I've turned this into a day-job and heck, my logs aren't even a bit colored in. I even had some down-time due to a broken truck and still made some cash.

Knight does have some problems, don't get me wrong, but you can also work it in your favor if you do it right.

And I hate early morning pick-ups or drops. One thing that we can really complain about is the local we get sent over the Qualcomm!

Is that $3100.00 for the month? Is that your average or just a fluke? If so, that comes out to $775.00 per week or $155.00 a day for a 5 day work week. I hope it isn't true. That sounds like a very bad place to work if it is.

What is Net

Forget the gross for now, what did you net of that $3100? After medical insurance, taxes, etc, what go deposited in your account? Probably close to $2400 And that sucks. How long did you stay out for? But this is the industry right now. And this is I believe a pretty accurate number as to what most drivers net, if they even net that much. So many drivers lie though its hard to tell. "Oh, I tuk hum non hunderd dolla's las wuk". Yeah, and $300 the week before.
