I think no matter who they go to work for they are seeing it as just another job instead of a total lifestyle change. Same thing happens to people who join the military for the first time.

Small carrier or large carrier you are there to make them money. Any time you work for someone else that is whats going to happen. If you need them to remember your name then more power to ya.

Here is a true statement ,that's why it's very important to know their track record & weight before even thinking about putting an app in with them ,keep in mind it's their game so if it doesn't weigh in for you then what are they worth ?

i think with so many trucking companies out there it can be difficult finding a good one, the people working at a good company tend to be protective about giving out info, and the companies that are really good are hard to get in, what is a good company? for me it has to pay well 48cpm +, have great equipment and maintenance, have decent layover and waiting pay, have dispatchers that know what they are doing, consistent miles, also some people are located in areas like myself "florida" where it is challenging to get a good job, the cure is better regulation across the board, every driver should be able to clear after taxes a min of $1000 a week, there should also be a place on the internet dedicated to matching teams up for those that chose to do that. Finally steady home time.

Working for someone else is making them money. Working for yourself your still making money for someone else. Neither one is a guarantee to make you money.
Working for a large one or small you can still be ripped off. Size of a company has nothing to do with it.
Big one you're subject to the whims of corporate rule. Small enough one you're subject to the whims of family politics and disagreements. Think about it would you be happy to be treated like crap because the boss man just got in a fight with the wife? Getting let go by a big one is impersonal true. Is that better or worse than having the boss scream at you, call you every name in the book, threatened with violence and then left stranded? Depends on what you like I guess.
Smaller one you going to have to suck up, play the friend game, be mindful of family dynamics. Big one just deal with a faceless identity and follow the rules.
Big ones you have a means of dealing with disagreements through a set process. Small one its the boss way or no way.
Small ones your going to see preferred treatment of one driver over the other up close and personal. Big ones not so much.
Smaller ones you may be treated more like a 0/0. More freedom yes. More responsibility yes for the same money.
Big one type or make a call to road break down. Small one you may be expected to call repair shops yourself and be expected to pick the correct one based on price to get it done. Better have a cell phone and some way to search phone numbers or your screwed. Ya also better make a correct choice on the mechanic or your gonna have a bad time with the boss.
Big one fuel stops managed. Is that better than only to be able to fuel at the few places a smaller company can only do business with? Your still screwed from fueling where and when you want too. Nothing like being stuck because the boss man has failed to make a deposit and you can't get fuel until he has.
The only good thing? Maybe? Is your gonna find out real fast what its like to be a 0/0 with a smaller company. Your gonna find out how expensive repairs and up keep really are. You will most likely get a glimpse of what it means to miss a load or failure to deliver a load. How tight it is to make a profit or loose your ###.
The boss man makes a mistake by agreeing with a business partner? Your gonna be directly affected by those decisions really fast. There is no way to spread that lose out over thousand of trucks. You're subject to one or two people making the correct decisions based on their needs just like a big one. The difference is who is able to recover faster than the other. May take a year or years for a big company to recover and they have the resources to ride the storm out. Small ones don't.
Big or small there is no set answer. Lots of luck involved. Lots of risk to you either way.

Smaller doesn't always mean 'better'. A good rule of thumb in the industry is "The grass is greener on the other side because of the BS used for fertilizer".
