I just got into it with my dispatcher today. I had less than two hours on my 70 so I turned down a load rather than risk getting caught at a customer with no hours and told to leave. He laid the quilt trip thing of "We have no one else, now we'll miss our appointment." I told him to save the guilt trip and quit acting like a bottom feeder company. That got a phone call real quick and he found out I won't back down, no matter what he said I had a comeback. They rescheduled the pickup for tomorrow when I will have hours. That's the nice thing about being an o/o, no forced dispatch and a company that proclaims, "Safety is our cornerstone value."

The whole reason we have hours of service is because companies have a long history of treating drivers like beasts of burden that are easily replaced. Companies don't force you to do things that are illegal, they coerce. No, they don't violate the letter of the law, but they most certainly violate the spirit of it. CSA is the next step in holding shippers, receivers and trucking companies accountable. It's taking time, but the day is coming when drivers are not going to continually be "hung out to dry" by the companies for which they drive.
