BlackLions - I believe it's regional . . . the shop where he would keep the truck during home time is in Portland. He does need to go through a week of their training - then he goes into his own truck.
bigrigs56 - when he was a trainee, he was held up in a motel for three full days while his trainer took home time because he had a doctor's appointment - so I really don't think they took him off of the truck to keep him on schedule. They only took him off of the truck when he refused to pay for his hotel room. My husband did not ask to be a trainer . . . that was one of the things they sold him on to get him into a leased truck. He was concerned that he would not make enough money being a lease driver - he voiced that concern - and that was when they sold him on signing up to be a trainer. Unfortunately, they didn't bother to tell him that he would be responsible for paying for the students room should his truck break down 8 days after signing the lease. We understand that he would have had to put his trainee up in a hotel room had he wanted to take home time while the trainee was with him - but CR England telling him he'd have to pay for the trainee's room as well as his own 8 days into the lease was a bit much! They were not helpful in any way at all. They didn't even offer to bring him another truck . . . and they didn't try to talk him into sticking it out. As soon as he said he was going to leave - their only reply was - "well, that's your choice!"
I'm glad your experience with them is not the same as the majority I've heard and read about. I wouldn't wish this on my worse enemy, especially in today's economy - people need to make money - not go in the hole.NavigatorWife and AfterShock Thank this. -
He should be able to take the truck home if he wanted to... if there's parking. If his going to Salt lake city for training, tell him to say Hi to Kay and Mike (from Darius). Schneider is a good starting company, he should be happy there.
Is it the 11 western states by any chance? -
Actually, he's going to Sonoma, CA (I believe). Yeah - he has to leave the truck at the yard because it's just a little over the allowed distance - we'll be moving right off of the I5 corridor about 40 or so miles from the yard . . . plus we won't have parking available at the house. No biggie though - I can either pick him up or he can buy a beater car to drive back and forth since he will be able to park a car there while he's on the road.
I do believe he will be driving in the western states only, yes.NavigatorWife, AfterShock and Cy Ran Thank this. -

I'm just starting my pre-research to see if 'a truckers life for me' would be a reasonable career change since all indications say a pirate's life is not. Posting like yours really show me the pit-falls and changes that can happen. I do hope that you can/will post any follow up issues with CRE.AfterShock and lbeck Thank this. -
Do A LOT of research and talk to drivers if you can on here and in person - don't take one persons word from any company. If you don't have your cdl, try and go to a local community college and go that route instead of spending $$, even if you have it or having to "work it off at a company". Think about getting all the endorsements at once when you get your cdl - easier to get a job and anyone can use the extra info/knowledge. I don't work for schneider anymore but I think they are a good starting company... if I only thought about recruiting people when I actually worked there, I could have been paid for it
Good luck!NavigatorWife and lbeck Thank this. -
I'm feeling so much better about the positive feedback on Schneider . . . thanks for all the info everyone. I will let you know how it goes with Schneider. He leaves in a week.

That's good news lbeck.
Schneider rejects approximately seven out of ten applicants. That he was accepted is a feather in his cap.
I began my career with Schneider and was going to suggest giving them a try.
I'm pleased to learn that he has already done that.
I think Schneider will be a much better fit.
What are your feelings about relocating to California?
I sincerely wish you both the best of success and hope that you'll continue to keep us informed.

I plan to research this to ad nauseum, along with a few other career changing ideas.
I've looked into the community College thing but have not found a local one yet. I don't want to hi-jack this posting, but I have a long list of Qs am starting to find answers for, but will start posting the Q's someday soon.
